It didn't take long for NASA to realize that human interaction would be required. Today, there are now typically two types of astronauts:
Mission Specialist Astronauts
- these astronauts work with pilots to conduct experiments, launch satellites, and maintain spacecraft and equipment. Their background can be in engineering, science, or medicine. They can also work as astronaut educators, inspiring students to consider joining the US space program.
Pilot Astronauts
- these astronauts serve as space shuttle and international space station pilots and commanders. They are responsible for the crew, the mission, the mission success and the safety of the flight.

Ever since I was little, I bought myself a telescope from Toys R Us, and every night since, I would go outside at night, Climb onto the roof of my house, and gaze at the moon and the stars. As I grew older, astronomy always intrigued me, and by third grade I was already documenting the stars and the constellations in the sky, and I knew immediately that I wanted to be an astronaut. I had found out about the career due to all the sci-fi movies my dad and I would always watch and the “blast off” game we used to play, which consisted of us laying in bed with my blanket over us as we poked imaginary buttons and made loud noises as if we were actually being launched into space. My dad is one of the greatest fanatics of sci-fi movies I have ever known, and the day I told him that I wanted to go into space, we created my very own astronaut suit out of cardboard. Ever since that day, my dreams have continued to grow bigger and brighter!

Copernicus is most famous for his development of one of the first heliocentric models of the Universe. A heliocentric model is one in which the sun is the center. Copernicus referred to the observations of Ptolemy while developing his model. Other than expanding our knowledge of the universe, Copernicus’ ideas are credited for starting the scientific revolution. The scientific revolution led to the development of nearly all modern technology and scientific knowledge. #socool

1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. An advanced degree is desirable. Quality of academic preparation is important.

2. At least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft. Flight test experience is highly desirable.

3. Ability to pass a NASA space physical which is similar to a military or civilian flight physical and includes the following specific standards:

  • Distant visual acuity: 20/100 or better uncorrected, correctable to 20/20 each eye.
  • Blood pressure: 140/90 measured in a sitting position.
  • Height between 62 and 75 inches.

Basic requirements for a Mission Specialist include the following:

1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. Degree must be followed by at least three years of related, progressively responsible, professional experience. An advanced degree is desirable and may be substituted for part or all of the experience requirement (master's degree = 1 year of experience, doctoral degree = 3 years of experience). Quality of academic preparation is important.

2. Ability to pass a NASA space physical, which is similar to a military or civilian flight physical and includes the following specific standards:

  • Distance visual acuity: 20/200 or better uncorrected, correctable to 20/20, each eye.
  • Blood pressure: 140/90 measured in a sitting position.

3. Height between 58.5 and 76 inches.

  • Immediate weight loss. It's the easiest way to shedding those unwanted pounds.
  • Not worrying about what to wear for the day. An astronaut's attire is pretty standard across the board. It goes as follows: puffy white suit, helmet, and a square backpack attached to one, thick tube.
  • And of course, the view of from outer space!!
3 negatives:
  • when you arrive back on Earth, all the weight comes back, and you might actually have gained weight, depending how much freeze-dried ice cream you had while on the ship. Haha
  • Being totally disconnected from your social media, so you won’t be able to check your facebook to see what friends are making for dinner :(
  • And of course, the high risk of.. Well.. death..

I believe that by the time that I become an astronaut, the job will not only be stationed to the ISS (International Space Station), but that astronauts will be going to mars, and attempting to sustain life on there as well.
