Author: Ginny Rorby
Publication Date: 2006
Genre: Fiction
Interest Level: 5-7
Text Level: DRA 50, Guided Reading V
Teaser: This novel is about a girl who is deaf and is not allowed to use sign language. Instead, her mother makes her read lips in order to communicate. When she meets a doctor and his baby chimpanzee, everything changes and the girl has never been happier. In this book, children can learn a little bit about what it is like to be deaf, how it feels to not be able to communicate, and that everybody, no matter what the circumstances are, is capable of something great.
Teaching Idea: The teacher can lead a discussion with students and ask them what they know about deafness. Do you know anyone who is deaf? What is deafness? How can it impact somebody's life? The teacher can explain what sign language is and maybe have a lesson on it. Then he/she can ask questions: How would you feel if you were not allowed to communicate? Lastly, the teacher can talk about deaf culture and have a guest speaker.

Author: Jean Ferris
Publication Date: 2001
Genre: Fiction
Interest Level: 4-6
Text Level: 730L
Teaser: Theo, the only hearing person in a family of three deaf people, is expected to be the interpreter for his family. This always leaves him feeling taken advantage of. When his father becomes ill, he is the one who nurses his father and takes care of the family. Adding to his frustration, the time he has lost keeps him from seeing a girl at school whom he has become fond of. In this book, students can learn about deaf family dynamics and the results of different companionships with family and friends.
Teaching Idea: The teacher can have the students make a four square concept development map. Students can focus on the concept of each relationship Theo has with his deaf family members, whether they be good or bad, and fill out the definition, examples, and non-examples of good and bad relationships. After filling out the worksheet, students can share their ideas with groups.
Academic Everyday Word Wall: The teacher can use this strategy to find words students use when talking about students who are deaf and or have disabilities in general. One side could be the everyday terms and one side could be the medical/academic terms.
More Ideas: http://www.teacherplanet.com/content/deaf-awareness
The purpose of this lesson is to try to make people understand what it's like to be thought of as less because you're deaf. Students should be able to explain why people who are deaf are just as worthy as hearing people. It works with this book because the relationships throughout the book are good examples of worth.

After the first semester, he returns home on his family's apple farm for Christmas and confronts a difficult situation with a hearing friend.
Teaching Ideas: The teacher can teach deafness to students using this book and the Shades of Meaning Paint Chip. Students can use the words deaf, hearing, etc. for their paint chips.
More Ideas: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/deaf-awareness-lesson-plans-6219657
The purpose of this lesson is to expose students to deafness and get them thinking about what it means and the impacts it can have. She hates the dark because she couldn't sign to her friends or see anyone's lips when they spoke. The silver pin Grandpa gave her was lost in the woods; even though a stormy night was coming, Mandy was determined to find it.
Teaching Ideas: Because this book is usually read to students by an adult, the teacher could ask students if they know what it means to be deaf. Students could draw a picture of what they think a person who is deaf looks like and or a scene from the book.
The purpose of this lesson is to expose students to deafness and give them an example of what it is.

Author: Colin Thomson
Genre: Poetry
Teaser: This poem describes the stereotypes that people who are deaf are known by. But that's exactly it; they are just stereotypes.
Teaching Idea: This poem should be taught in a middle school class, and the teacher needs to explain acceptance. The teacher should ask students if they have ever had an experience with a deaf person, and what their thoughts on it are. The teacher should describe why it's important to accept everyone, no matter what. Students can respond to "what would you do" situational questions. After they respond to questions, they can brainstorm writing ideas to write their own poem about a hardship they have faced/overcome.
The purpose of this lesson is to emphasize the fact that we need to accept people for who they are and not define them by their disability. It works with this poem because both touch on different points about accepting people who are deaf.
http://limpingchicken.com/2013/01/11/poem-if-i-told-you-i-was-deaf-would-you-turn-away-by-colin-thomson/
