How do we balance and implement the feedback and needs being communicated to us by the regional employers that take part in our advisory committee meetings and the training and outlook that we are receiving about culturally sensitive instruction. I feel as though we're trying to be more accommodating of students and aware of the varied cultural backgrounds (and their implications in a class setting) with the interest of increasing their level of success, but I feel that the same level of accommodation may conflict with what employers are asking of us as far as workforce preparation. (IE: employers want punctuality, work ethic, and a level of professionalism... but in some cases being culturally sensitive could equate to lowered expectations in these same areas if not implemented properly)

What is the college doing to address the inequities between admins, faculty, and classified? Why are classified required to be on campus and no one else is? Why do faculty get paid for PD but classified do not? Why did some people get $ to set up home offices for remote work and others did not?

How does Chaffey support employees who experience racism in their work environment?

As a Chaffey employee of color who has experienced and witnessed workplace harassment/bullying, I wonder what Chaffey actually does to support its employees who deal with this sort of thing. I made multiple reports of my experiences to my FLM over several months as the incidences continued. I contacted HR as well. Nothing was done. The dean told me they would "talk to" the person, but no concrete actions were taken to deal with the situation or to support me in changing my work environment. I'm glad that the institution is talking about the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion... however, at this point it's just a lot of talk. Employees of color who experience harassment/bullying from colleagues or superiors are not supported. If Chaffey wants to retain their employees of color, something must be done to support them- especially when they encounter this kind of work environment.

Does Chaffey provide diversity, bias, social responsibility training for its employees? I've experienced folks that don't realize that their comments and or actions can be racially and socially insensitive. Everyone's social norm is not the same and we all need to be aware of that.

To a large degree, we already know what we need to do to help our students succeed. For example, we know that every student could benefit from the same counseling and financial support that every EOPS student gets. What are the administrative barriers preventing us for from doing this? Is it a matter of not being able to hire enough counselors and support staff? Can we use equity funds/Mackenzie Scott grant to get this rolling?

I still don't understand the decision to eliminate the bloom training requirement. While I agree that Chaffey attempts to employ equitable hiring, bias exists and operates at implicit levels. I've been part of hiring committees and witnessed bias behaviors, actions, and decisions, and when you're outnumbered there isn't much you can do. It's important to recognize that higher education was built by White dominant structures that operate with a high level of privilege that is embedded in society. The existence of these structures continues to oppress people of color.

What power does the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion have? Is there a budget associated with that position? Can this person hire people? Does this person have any power over people in other departments? It is wonderful to have someone leading the equity effort, but it seems that that person has not been sufficiently empowered to get things done. There has also been a lot of turnover in this position and it is not clear why. Would the administration care to be more transparent about this?
