In this book these two things go together because these friends are keeping very big secrets from each other and lying about those secrets and more. I am towards the end of this book and  here the two friends (California and Annie) are finally starting to open up and admit the secrets to each other. One of the things that Annie lied about is her name. She told California that her name was Annie but her name was actually Annabel. California lied about her grandfather, mother and about having cancer.

So they played in the state cup and lost EVERY SINGLE GAME! So the team's head coach resigned so Greg's mom became head coach. She entered Greg's team into the 2nd chance league but they still lost every single game. So now they are the worst team in the state. But all this happened because they gave up so I think the theme is that you shouldn't give up unless you want your team to look like Greg's.
