One of the main issues that I am actually facing is the methodology to teach the English language.

I work at a school which is part of an ONG that provides different social services to the community that leaves around the dump garbage of zone 3. So, the students' social context is hard since they do not have the necessary technological resources to study virtually.
That is why the teachers are teaching through integrated projects.

An integrated project is to develop a common topic providing the information and examples about it and asking the students to do three or four activities as maximum. Finally, the students should elaborate a product regarding this project such as albums, graphic organizers, parallel texts, etc.

Teaching English language under these circumstances has been a challenge because the English level of my students is low, I cannot use technological resources to help them to understand and to encourage them to use the English language better, so I have had to apply the Grammar Translation Method that I really do not like, but it is the only way that I have founded to develop and to explain a short topic.
So, I plan the activities in English, but I translate that content in Spanish also. Even so, there are lots of students that do not understand anything, answer in Spanish, or simply do anything; they do not even try.

However, I use WhatsApp , which is the media where we have to send important information and I try to send some audio or short videos regularly to encourage the students to practice their English skills.

Some volunteers from Main visited our school at the beginning of last year. So, I planned an activity to encourage the 4th. graders to develop and practice their English skills with them, emphasizing speaking and listening.

From the beginning, the students welcomed their new friends. We did an integrated activity to introduce them, and then we developed the main activity which was to know about Guatemala and The United States cultures respectively. So I divided the classroom in teams of 4 or 5 students and 3 volunteers for each team.

The students and the volunteers both make some questions to figure out some traditions, national symbols, and interesting facts about their countries by using simple questions such as, "Does your national bird is green?", "Does its name is Quetzal?" "Is your county in North America?", "Do you celebrate Thanksgiving in November?", etc.

As final task, each team had to elaborate a simple poster writing and drawing the information they got. Then, they introduce themselves by saying the name of their team and explaining the results they found briefly.

It was a great activity for many reasons; motivational environment, self motivation, high, active and integrated participation, use of the language without using native language. My role as teacher was to facilitate the activities, monitoring the time and encouraging both students and volunteers to get involved. If the students did not know how to say a word, they asked, drew, or made some gesture as well as the volunteers. The achievement indicator was to express fluently in English as much as they can even if they made some grammar mistakes. It was a great fun experience for all of us!
