Even though often times we now see it as “a past thing”, othering, excluding and institutionalising people with disabilities (both physical and not) still done up until the late 80s

Even now, tough it might appear “softer” people with disabilities are still segregated, e.g. “special” schools

The language we use around disability is a lot more important than I realised

Social work, though a force of good, can be used to uphold toxic and oppressive establishment values, and it’s important to remember that and check our own biases when assisting people in need

I consider myself a fairly progressive person, so I'm kind of worried I may not fit in a social work context if I have to follow guidelines and ethics that do not necessarily align with my own, e.g. if working with refugees

This course actually seem a lot more left-leaning than i thought, that's great

Psychiatry can be seen as a way to control people with disabilities

Social work, and overall helping the poor, is often seen as a charitable act, rather than enacting someone’s rights to have their needs met.

In the past (and even now) “social workers” often defended inequality, arguably it could even be said social work started as a way to separate “inconvenient” people from the rest of society”

For some reason I never thought about social as having been oppressive in the past, it's kind of a given really, considering the history of Australia with things like the Stolen Generation, but in my mind I never thought about the role that social workers had in these instances
