The grant opportunity that I have researched is the LEGO Learning System. This learning system promotes hands-on learning opportunities for students at the elementary level. Students will be challenged to solve real world problems using Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The learning opportunities will also help to prepare students for an ever changing world and promote 21st century skills. The grant opportunity would fund LEGO Education kits and would be asked to fulfill a $10,000 budget.

I think my school should apply for this because the kits I have researched and the lessons that go along with LEGO materials will help motivate students to participate in hands-on STEM lessons. In motivating and driving student participation within these subject fields, we can inspire students to create future goals for themselves. I also found a tweet/video (linked) explaining LEGO Education’s partnership with NASA. It was amazing to see the impact this had on students and I would love to see this occur within my classroom/school as well.

J.W. Couch Foundation By: Jessica Hawkins

Our group wrote a grant proposal for flexible seating. The J.W. Couch Foundation awards grants for preservation, education, and wellness. For education specifically, they are looking to fund schools that teach students 21st century skills needed for the future: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. Their website also identifies skills beyond the 4 C’s such as: agility and adaptability, initiative and entrepreneurship, and the ability to access and analyze information. In order to be eligible for the grant, applicants must be either public, private, charter, home school, 501(c)(3) organizations within the United States. The J.W. Couch Foundation meets on a quarterly basis to review grant applications. In order to be reviewed for the 2021 year, the proposal would be due by December 10, 2021. They do not have the proposal due dates posted for 2022 on their website. In order to submit a proposal, you can upload a pre-written proposal. In addition to the pre-written proposal, they request your mission statement, grant plants, project name, project summary, and project objectives. For this grant, you can select how much money you would like to be funded. For our group, we determined $10,000 would be needed to fund an entire grade level with flexible seating and professional development. The J.W. Couch Foundation has $700,000 planned for education for the 2021 year. As of November, they currently have $87,000 remaining for educational grants.

I think I should apply for this grant because students are recovering from a pandemic and now more than ever, we need our students to be our center of focus. Current practices in traditional schools are not set up with our students as the center focus. Furthermore, our learning spaces are not set to foster skills needed for the 21st century. If the learning environment was structured for collaboration with peers, students would be able to engage in opportunities for higher order thinking, communication, and creativity skills. In addition, we are a Title 1 school. For most of our students, school is their safe place. They should feel safe to take risks, set goals, and reflect on their learning. If we want student agency to be present, we have to include our students in the decision making. We need to allow them to help create the environment. We need to ask them, what would help you be successful? In the 21st century classroom, having a well-managed classroom should not look like students in straight rows but instead engaged and involved in the learning. Flexible seating can help our class become engaged and involved in their learning.

Walmart.org has a grant opportunity for anywhere between $250 - $5,000, with funding coming from Walmart and/or Sam's Club facilities. Public schools qualify for the application process, but must be "CyberGrants FrontDoor verified prior to applying". I explored this grant as far as I could without officially registering my school through this program. The grant requirements are pretty open ended, from what I can tell. It appears that you initially go through an online checklist to make sure you qualify, and then move on to writing your grant proposal.

I think that this would be a great grant opportunity to use for a flexible seating environment that allows for stronger technology-centered collaboration. Walmart could be used to purchase the classroom furniture and other materials from, so perhaps it would be a "boosting" factor if it were explicitly explained in the proposal that the grant money would be used to purchase directly from the business supplying the grant. I also think this grant would be a great opportunity for my school because it does not seem like it would be much extra work on anyone involved once the application is complete (no follow-up data, etc.). The last thing that schools need right now is more work for and/or demands on teachers, so a grant that does not require further action once acquired would be ideal.

Link to grant

Association of American Educators Foundation Classroom Grant Application

The Association of American Educators Foundation awards grants to any full-time educator. The educator is awarded $500 upon application approval and submission of qualifying receipts. Qualifying items include, but are not limited to books, software, calculators, math manipulatives, art supplies, audio-visual equipment, and lab materials. Funds must be used within 1 year of the application deadline. Applications are due twice a year, on Oct. 1 and March 1. Applicants must:

Provide an overview of the project or program that you are hoping to complete in your classroom should you be awarded the materials you are applying for. (100 words)

In a 2-column table, list the items you want to purchase and their approximate cost. Include a total cost at the bottom of the table.

Describe in detail what led you to seek funding. Include information about the specific need of your students, class, school, and/or community. Also include if you considered any research (100 words).

Describe in detail how the program, project, or materials will be used and implemented. Include information on lessons, unit overviews, additional people involved and timelines as necessary (100 words).

Describe in detail the impact that the purchased materials will have on your students, school, or community. Include information on specific benefits you hope to see and how you will be able to judge your own success (100 words).

I think this grant is the perfect opportunity to apply for myself, so that I can trial flexible seating in my classroom. Then, I can easily extend the application to my team members and other teachers once I can review the success of the project. The grant application process seems relatively easy, which is ideal given all the extra work classroom teachers are currently facing.

This grant opportunity is specifically for middle grades schools who want to encourage forward thinking with career choice. Middle grades is the perfect time for students to begin developing a sense of their identity and how their future job will fit into it. The grant awards $5,000 to the top three program proposals. This grant is available to teachers, administrators and counselors working with middle-school aged students. The Playbook Challenge offers an exciting opportunity for schools to:

Integrate experiential career exploration into existing courses or programs, or to adopt proven curricula to establish career exploration initiatives.

Significantly expand the number of students who participate in meaningful career exploration.

Support middle to high school transitions and build family and community engagement.

I think this grant would be perfect for my school because we have a lot of students who come from lower-income households. Many of them aren't presented with information that can guide their development or presented with a way different from the environment they are growing up in. Our school is fairly diverse and along with that comes a belief/fear that our students won't be successful because of their racial and socio-economic backgrounds. I think it would be awesome to show our students that they have a lot of options available and I think the Playbook Challenge could fund the beginning of something great.
The Playbook Challenge

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation provides grants to schools, non-profit organizations and public libraries that support students who are reading below grade level or struggle with reading. In order to be eligible for a grant opportunity, organizations must be in a state that the Dollar General Corporation operates and be within 15 miles of a Dollar General Store. The D.G.L.F. supports 4 different types of grant programs including; adult literacy, family literacy, youth literacy and summer reading. The maximum grant amount for each grant program varies, with adult and family literacy being the most with up to $10,000. Youth literacy has a maximum grant of $4,000 and the summer reading program with $3,000. The youth literacy and summer reading programs may only be eligible to apply for the D.G.L.F. grant opportunity 2 years in a row, with then skipping a year after before re-applying. The adult and family literacy programs have no yearly restrictions on grant eligibility and may apply as many years as needed. Each of the programs fund different items, but all have the same focus on achieving student success. The youth literacy and summer reading programs which are granted most often to schools, provide funds for new technology, books/materials for literacy programs, implementing and expanding literacy programs.

I believe that Marley Elementary should apply for the Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant program because we are a Title 1 school who has many students throughout all grade levels reading below grade level. Due to the pandemic, there has been an increased amount of students who are reading below their grades targeted reading level. Students in the primary grades are lacking basic reading skills in which they would have developed during a regular school year. Students in the intermediate grades are regressing in reading due to limited opportunities during virtual learning for reading instruction, especially small groups. The D.G.L.F. grant for youth literacy would allow Marley to expand on the FUNdations and Fountas and Pinnell reading programs we already have in place. Marley would be able to provide new literacy materials for teachers and students, while also providing newer books for the school. Adding new literacy technology into classrooms would allow for students to become more engaged in literacy and hopefully provide the spark/desire of reading.

Educators of America is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping teachers improve student engagement and increase student achievement in the classroom through professional development opportunities and their MicroGrant program. The MicroGrant program supplies up to $5,000 worth of educational technology to teacher applicants. This grant program is determined to enhance education by providing teachers with the technological resources and professional development skills to inspire students to achieve their best.

This grant opportunity is a great fit for me because we share the same problem. On the Educators of America site, they state “being an educator or a teacher in a classroom today without the proper educational technology is becoming all too common of a problem.” This is the same problem I address in my technology plan. Further, the grant would cover the costs of VR goggles, and an annual license subscription, and online teacher training to ClassVR, a versatile platform using the power of Virtual and Augmented Reality for education and training from the classroom. I believe I should apply for this grant to begin funding the educational technology needed for my technology plan.

Walmart provides Community Grants to eligible K-12 public or nonprofit private schools, charter school, community/junior college, state/private college or university. The grant range can be from a minimum of $20 to a maximum of $5000. I would like to apply for the Walmart grant to help purchase a NDI PTZ camera with Ultra high definition video to be used in the TV Studio and to record school wide events. There are certain guidelines applying for this grant:

Minimum of $250 to maximum of $5000

Eligible nonprofit organizations - public school

Application deadline December 31, 2021

Organizations can only submit a total of 25 applications in the 2021 cycle

I have applied for the Walmart Local Community Grant in the past and some changes have been made to the application. When applying to the grant organizations must be verified through the CyberGrants FrontDoor. The FrontDoor is a free service portal that allows potential organizations applying for a grant to access information in order to meet standards of all corporate sponsors offering grants. This service is very helpful when applying for a grant. It has the ability to find your Tax ID, allow additional users within your organization, and provides organization profile and banking information.

The Walmart Foundation focuses on charitable support within the community. Our school is right across the street from Walmart and it has been supportive in programs that help build community and create economic opportunities. The Walmart Grant Eligibility “Getting Started” page is a great guide and shows if your organization can qualify and has the link to the application. The process makes it very easy for teachers to apply. Once you have registered in the FrontDoor portal it takes you to the grant which is quite short in length. I like the Walmart Local Grant because once your school is registered, the school can apply up to 25 times asking for what may be needed for the school. It is a very easy process that does not put extra work on the teacher or teachers that are applying. I am going to apply for this grant for the needed equipment in the TV studio which will help our school in the creation of our live morning announcements, video taping all school functions and be utilized in the Performing Arts Magnet classes in editing videos made throughout the school year.

The Believe in Reading grant awards grants to already established (at minimum 2 years), successful, provable literacy programs. Reading must be the main activity taking place in order to be considered for the grant. This programs funds any age group or aspect that supports any type of reading and literacy including but not limited to English as a Second Language and adult literacy. The literacy program serves populations that show out-of-the-ordinary needs such as low reading scores and high poverty levels. The grant's overall goal is to help applicants purchase books and materials for the building of libraries or to stock a book vending machine (NOT to purchase the machine itself). High need populations are favored in the application process. Believe in Reading grants are only for organizations that have been designated as having tax-exempt status according to the IRS Code Section 501(c)(3), or it's equivalent for educational institutions, including public libraries. Award amounts vary. Awards range from $1,000 to $10,000. For first-time applicants, the grant award is no larger than $3,000. It currently funds up to three years for anyone organization, but the grant must be requested each year.

I think that my school should apply for this grant because the population of students we serve come from low-income households with high poverty levels and students who are grade levels behind in their reading. Preventing success in other content classes. This grant will allow for the purchase of books that students would be more eager, anxious, and likely to read and would promote more reading to happen amongst students. Also, providing reading computer software programs that students will be able to work on in and out of class as well as emergent literacy programs that will be beneficial to both students and parents.

The grant also provides the opportunity for students and teachers to work directly with Samsung employees for project-based learning as well as provide professional development for teachers.

I believe my school should apply for this grant because of what it offers beyond the resources themselves. Having a Samsung employee be a direct partner with the classroom is invaluable. Students would be able to better understand how the technology provided from this grant can be a versatile tool with a variety of uses. The professional development is key as well so that the teachers can also understand what is possible with those resources. It is also valuable to have the students want to see the change in their community as well. This could be a project for a class to apply for.

-Zach Watson

This grant provides funding for projects created by educators, education support professionals, or specialized instructional support personnel who are current members of the National Education Association. These projects should focus on increasing student engagement in the classroom; developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills of students; promoting collaborative activities; mastering essential skills; and are self-sustainable after the grant expires after a year from the time that it was awarded. Funds can be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment (cannot be used for acquiring electronic devices such as computers or tablets), transportation, or technology. The application can be made either for a $2000 or a $5000 worth of grant.

This is a great opportunity for either myself or the school to provide funding for projects like acquiring ClassVR equipment (set of 8); or transformation of at least three classrooms into flexible learning environments; or acquiring a variety of novels that are focused on the themes of equality, environmental protection, and diversity that can be used for collaborative cross-curricular lessons; or support the building of a greenhouse or hydroponics garden in our school.

The Toshiba America Foundation awards grants to Middle and High School teachers who have devised an innovative intention to increase science, technology, engineering, and math instruction in their classrooms. Teachers in grades six through twelve can apply for a $5,000 or more Toshiba America Foundation award to help bring a project-based innovative idea with measurable outcomes into their classroom.

This funding, in my opinion, would be an excellent opportunity to purchase VR headgear and the applications required to engage children in virtual reality experiences in the classroom. Due to the present restrictions, students are not permitted to go on field trips. Students can take virtual field trips using VR technology, which allows them to travel and experience sites all around the world without leaving the classroom.

This grant focuses on the "unmet and unfunded" side of education. Therefore, they award $500 each year to projects that give benefit to student learning. In order to be awarded this grant, the projects need to have an emphasis on aerospace, and also connect to STEAM. One school can be awarded twice per year, and the only items that are allowed to be purchased are those that are mentioned in the original grant, meaning that the educator needs to use the money on the items that were originally proposed.

This type of grant would be great for my school and the innovation that I am proposing. First, it promotes STEAM, which is a major focus of maker spaces. Next, since maker spaces allow for students to create freely, it is unlike most of the curriculum in school. In terms of materials, funds will be considered for things such as parts and supplies for robotics programs, STEM supplies, and STEM software. Therefore, this grant would be a great one for my school to apply for.

Slooh is a virtual platform that gives inner-city classrooms the opportunity to learn about astronomy- “Replace City Lights with Starlight!” The Slooh Space Exploration Grant for Title 1 Schools is designed so students can experience the latest, interactive, astronomy technology to explore the stars and universe! Teachers and students are given control of online telescopes and a curriculum that can be integrated in lessons for 4th grade to college. The grant also provides teacher professional development. The Slooh program would also prepare students for jobs in the growing space industry and other STEM fields.

Slooh’s Space Exploration Grant would be a great addition to the Southwest Baltimore Charter School (SBCS) because it would provide students with an unique experience in both the use of technology and the learning of astronomy. Most inner-city youths rarely see the stars in the sky because they are often out-shined by the artificial horizon created by street and building lights. If SBCS applied for this grant and got accepted, we could introduce the program as an after-school activity or even offer it as an elective. Either way, if incorporating the Slooh Space Exploration program would provide students with authentic tech usage, unique learning experiences, and help level the playing field for students by, “making real-world, real-time space exploration accessible for every student,” then SBCS would love the opportunity to engage!
