A Tang Dynasty version of "when the stars of mankind shine", the whole book uses eight stories to connect the history of the Tang Dynasty from prosperity to decline to extinction, see the times and destiny from the eyes of different poets, and tell the dreams, difficulties and drifts of young people in Changan. This book lets us know that the famous poets we read today wrote those classic works handed down from generation to generation. For them, it is also a bargaining chip for exchanging fame and spreading their status in life. Bei Mingyu did not write their stories into simple poetry appreciation or personal biography, but connected their stories with about 150 years since the An Shi rebellion to tell an great story. "Young talents come to Chang'an in the hope of becoming a good official, serving the country and keeping a name in history. But no one knows what the turning point of history is, and their fate is always rebellious and not according to their imagination.
Therefore, despite their knowledge and enthusiasm, poets like them are still shut out of the chaotic officialdom, which is why this book is called Chang'an guest. These poets are only guests of Chang'an, but they can't stay here forever.
8.4 Mina

In the story, I think the most important thing in the story is where Atticus tells Jem that "It is a sin to kill a mocking bird", in the book, it means "don't make any harm, unless it did something to you". In story, why is it a sin to kill a mockingbird? In the novel itself, Miss Maudie explains to Scout why Atticus declared that it was a sin to kill a mockingbird: “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, don't do one thing but sing their hearts out of us".
After reading the book, The book had changed me, I have been changed to making myself do things that I think that is only right and wanted to do in life. And now I mostly stopped myself from making bad decisions in life. The second thing the book changed me is where the book said that "It is a sin to kill a mocking bird".
I felt that line meant a very lot to me, to made me more calm when I felt bad and stressed

I read this book twice before I understand it. It's a great truth in life. His story begins with the death of molso's mother, but at molso's mother's funeral, he was not sad at all. Just because he didn't cry at the funeral, he was identified as a demon of deliberate murder, but is it true? In life, if others say this circle is bigger, no one will believe you say another circle is bigger. This book allows you to experience the absurdity of the world from a unique perspective. In this world, good "I" seems out of place, "I" seems completely different from this world. In order to get together, I lost myself. After reading this book, I believe you can know more.

Amy 8.4

The first section focus on his fresh feelings about Africa fulfils which are surprising findings in his study. The second focus on his return to the remote village and their friendship. It is not an academic book with theories or professional vocabulary. It is about how an"innocent" educated man learns from a wild and primary society. The cultural and religious conflict looks amusing, but the inspiration behind the conflict is about the understanding of the world and the value of life.

Ms. Huang MS Teacher

Behavioral psychology is a school of psychology that originated in the United States in the early 20th century and was founded by the American psychologist Watson. The behaviorist view is that psychology should not study consciousness, but only behavior. Behavior is the combination of bodily reactions that an organism uses to adapt to changes in its environment. These reactions are no more than muscle contractions and glandular secretions, some of which are expressed outside the body, some hidden inside the body, and some of which vary in intensity. The behavioral school believes that human psychological consciousness and mental activity are inscrutable and inaccessible, and that psychology should study human behavior. Psychology studies behavior in order to identify the relationship between stimulus and response, so that the response can be inferred from the stimulus and the stimulus from the response, for the purpose of predicting and controlling human behavior.
Echo 9.1

This is not a book of his own writing, however, but his analysis of various stories by Russian authors, based on his notes from teaching a course for several years on this topic. While I don't exactly enjoy the Russian short fiction, his perspective on them helps me appreciate the stories more, and a lot of the writing advice he includes with his analysis really resonates with me. There can be a lot that can be learned from analyzing the works from others. He has also created a SubStack called Story Club where he also continues to show his accumulation of creative writing expertise.

Ms. Marquardt HS Teacher

8.1 Natalie

From Sophia Chen 8.1

I don't usually read fictions, to be honest. However, if I were asked to make one recommendation of any contemporary works that you must read, then I'd definitely say this one.

This book was originally a birthday gift from one of my best American friends at a time when I was really frustrated about many things in my late 20s, starting to let my negativity affect people around me. That's the time when my friend gave me this book as a gift without telling me why I should do so, but simply said: "I think it's time for you to read this book." And I did. Since then, I've been returning to the book almost every year to refresh my mind and understanding about many life events happening along the journey of growing-up. Another reason to recommend it in the OCAC context is that it's fairly accessible English fiction to students here. I mean it's not too long, too difficult and connects to some aspects of our lives that students can reflect on. In addition, this fiction was adapted to a film version that you can easily find on YouTube.

Well, I'll stop here for now and leave you to decide if you'd like to check it out or not.

Enjoy reading! Connect to your inner world!

Yuan (Michelle) Hu, HS Teacher

Cheese represents what you desire in life, such as a nice job, a love relationship, money or things, health, or spiritual peace of mind. The maze is where you go to find what you're looking for, whether it's the organization you work for, your family, or the neighborhood you reside in. The issue is that the cheese continues to move.

The people in the novel are confronted with an unexpected turn in their search for the cheese. As I read, I'm sometimes reminded of John Wyndham's "The Chrysalids", which I enjoyed reading as a kid. There are also some links that could be made to more modern stories like "Divergence" or even "Harry Potter" (there's a selecting/categorising ceremony). I'm reading this book because I am using it for Grade 8 English class. It links some of the content we covered in unit 3 to some of the concepts in unit 4. It's a very ambitious read for Grade 8 so don't worry, we're building in a bit of differentiation using plot summaries :)

Dr Terrett MS Teacher

7.5 Jessica

Instead of the usual inspirational stories, you'll learn a lot about how to deal with close relationships with family and friends. I especially liked a sentence in the cover“You can't blend in when you were born to stand out.”

I'd give it an 8 or 9 out of 10. Because it is suitable for many people, such as anxiety patients, autistic people and so on can read.

The novel The Giver written by Lois Lowry in 1993, describes a society of Utopia, where there is no hunger, crime, homeless people, etc. The main character Jonas lives with his mother, and father, a mild-mannered, tenderhearted Nurturer who works with infants, sister Lily and his little brother Gabriel, a little boy brought home by his father. Jonas shows his apprehension about The Ceremony of Twelve, which is a signal of great change. At this ceremony, he is designated by the committees to be the receiver of memory, who has to take the responsibility of receiving all human memories in the past. During the training with the last receiver, he knows all the truths about this so-called community of Utopia. The release of handicapped new birth refers to, in fact, injecting some chemicals into the baby to make it die, while Jonas’s parents tell him the release is just sending a baby elsewhere. The ending of the novel is ambiguous and mysterious.

I would absolutely recommend this great science fiction to teenagers as the plot is thrilling and the theme is thought-provoking. After reading this book, I had a profound thought about the Utopia world. Is it really a perfection? Or it is just a lie covered by many white lies? I would give it a solid nine out of ten.

10-2 Yoyo Chen

Pride and Prejudice is a novel written by British novelist Jane Austen. The novel tells us the story of Mr. Bennet’s family of five unmarried daughters and their hope for a better marriage.

Characters:

Elizabeth Bennet

The most intelligent and spirited young woman with quick wit.

Fitzwilliam Darcy

A wealthy, proud young man of a well-established family.

Jane Bennet

A beautiful and gentle daughter of Mr. Bennet. She is Elizabeth’s confidant and the oldest of the Bennet daughters.
Charles Bingley

A good-natured and wealthy friend of Darcy who falls in love with Jane.

Mr. Bennet

A gentleman of modest income, married Mrs. Bennet

Mrs. Bennet

Mr. Bennet’s wife, and foolish, unrestrained mother.

Written from the perspective of Elizabeth, the novel explores a number of themes, such as love, marriage, pride, prejudice, class, reputation, and many others.

In my opinion, what is good about this novel is that the big theme-marriage spread into several small themes. Marriage is also a clue to connect the experiences of many characters, showing the social background at that time, and showing different views on marriage.

I think the difficulty lies in the fact that the book is a bit profound. For students, marriage is still a bit distant. Maybe we will have a deeper understanding of this book in the future.

I would recommend this book, and I will give 4 stars out of 5 for this book.
The author's description of the female characters is vivid. The inner thoughts and choices of the women in her works also reflect the life of women in the conservative state from the end of the 18th century to the early 19th century.

Lillian CHEN 10.2

"Love or Money" is a detective story. It tells the story of a mother and her children about money. Everyone in the Clarkson family is staring at the huge fortune of Molly, the owner of the house and everyone hope she will die soon, so they can get the huge inherited. Including her own daughter Diana and son Roger, who need the money to pay for their luxurious life; and the other daughter Jackie, Jackie hated Molly because she disapproved of her marriage to Tom, the gardener. And then there was Molly's brother-in-law Albert who desperately needed the money for his wife's illness. Finally, Molly died in her birthday night, who is the murderer? The truth seems to be emerging under Detective Walsh's questioning...

I highly recommend you to read this book. <love or money> is not as touching as other books about family love, it is even a little cruel, but it can also provide the reader with some thoughts, you can think about what love, family affection and money mean to a family. And you can stand on different point to think about it. For example if you’re Molly what would you do, if you know that all your relatives want you to dead. Similarly, you can look at the book from the perspective of other characters like Tom, and of course you can think as a reader, as an outsider, what would you do?

In addition, the story is not very long, so you don't need to spend a lot of time, and the English words of the book are not very difficult, it is easy to understand.

Finally, I would like to give this book five stars, because I am very satisfied with the book, both the story and the logic of the story. It’s perfect English reading for me, and I enjoy it.

Candy YANG 10.2

This book tells about a little girl named Sophie who was brought to the giant country by a kind-hearted giant. The giant is a kind-hearted giant. There are all kinds of terrible giants in the giant country, all of whom have a common hobby - cannibalism. In order to prevent other giants from continuing to eat people, the giant prepared a realistic dream for the queen of England, and then blew it into the bedroom of the palace to let the queen know that the giant killed so many lovely children. So the queen sent troops, caught nine cannibals and banned them for exhibition. The main characters are Sophie, The BFG and Mary.

I would recommend this book, and I will give 4 stars out of 5, because this is a different giant. The most important thing is that he believes that cannibalism is immoral. He prefers to eat big nose melons that are difficult to swallow. This is the biggest difference between him and other giants.

10.2 rosemary

It tells children a lot of knowledge in popular and vivid language, and enriches our minds. One disadvantage is that most of the problems it contains are very basic and tend to children with many problems. Teenagers can also watch, but these problems maybe not satisfy you, I think.

I would recommend this book, which can solve some simple problems in our daily life, because it contains the problem that we often don't think about. I would recommend this book to the people in primary or junior high school, because it may be more attractive for people of their age. If older children are interested, they can also read it.

Treasure Island is an adventure novel written by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson which was first published from 1881 to 1882 in the children’s magazine Young Folks . The novel tells us about a boy who has a treasure map and goes to an island to find the treasure . However , there are some pirates mixed in the sailors and they want the treasure too . The pirates has started a mutiny and they are fighting for the treasure between each other. At last , the boy ran away from the island and went back to the home . It is a good book because it vividly describes the different characteristics about people in the book and have a long context for the thrilling story of the crew , the boy and the pirates .

I will recommend the book because it is easy for non-native English speakers to read and learn some useful words from the book . Secondly , the plot in the novel is really stirring and it will help learners have more incentives to read some English books . The is no improper age group for the book , it depends on your purpose of reading the book , if you want to improve your reading skills and vocabularies , it is proper to read the book

4.5 stars over 5 stars

Sam 10.2

While driving Gatsby’s car, Daisy hits and kills a woman. Gatsby takes the blame, only to be shot by the woman’s husband. Many people say Fitzgerald's novel is about the death of the American dream, but I think it's about hope. The first five chapters, or even the first six, were tedious, or did I lack the ability to make sense of them.

I would recommend this book for everyone, for the reason, this book tells us that happiness CANNOT be bought with money, and Gatsby's death is further proof of the superficial realities of the American Dream.

5 stars
George 10.2

The British writer of "the detective" is Christian express. The novel tells the story of the East Express leaving Istanbul on a severe winter night. There were few passengers on the bus, including the famous private detective Poirot. The next morning, American tycoon Rachel was found dead in his box, stabbed with 12 knives. This is obviously murder. Poirot felt something strange and immediately launched an investigation at the request of the railway company. After asking all the passengers and the only steward, Poirot found that all the people were related to the dead and had been scolded and insulted by the dead, who was a criminal leader. Therefore, the dead were retaliated by all the passengers. Out of sympathy for the insulted, Poirot managed to get them out of suspicion. This book is a very excellent reasoning novel. All the details in the text suggest the murderer of the murder, but it needs to be read several times to clarify the clues in the text.I would recommend this book, but I would recommend you watch the film adapted from this novel. The film can make it easier for people to understand the plot.

Billy Class 10-2

The Hitchhiker By Roald Dahl: an absurd and realistic world

The Hitchhiker was published by Kiss, Kiss in 1960. In this story, the narrator picked up a hitchhiker on his way. The passenger didn’t want to tell his job at first. But he admitted that he was a ‘fingersmith’ at last.

Tricks in Language

In this story, to show the character’s class more clearly, Roald Dahl has used some tricks. Especially when writing the hitchhiker, his accent and incorrect grammar show that he was uneducated and forecast that he may not have a decent job. Moreover, the hitchhiker uses slang and informal words a lot. With the comparison of the narrator, it can clearly state the different classes between them.

Who’s the ‘good’ person?

There has always been a conflict between kindness and punishment. It seems that the police should be the one who represents fairness and justice, but he seemed really arrogant and unfair. Instead, the hitchhiker was proud of his job and claim that he never steals things from the poor and was honest. Also, the dramatic irony at the end, the warm-hearted narrator has been stolen even without his attention. This controversial conflict brings us to an absurd but realistic world that the author creates. And it let us think of the question: who’s the good person in fact?

Overall, I really appreciate this short and amazing fiction. Roald Dahl has never let me down. Someone said Dip in the pool is better, but I don’t agree with that. I strongly recommend all the high school students to read this fantastic story because of its clever words and themes which are worth thinking about.

G11

After reading this article I kept thinking, who is that narrator in the article? Could it be Roald Dahl himself? The strength of this story is that the plot stumbles throughout and takes a unique look at a situation that is rarely seen in life. The hitchhiker is actually a somewhat dangerous character. The novel combines punishment with crime and has some violence to keep the reader on their toes throughout the read. Unfolding from the narrator's point of view also brings the entire story development closer to the reader. I would recommend him to teenagers who are thinking deeply about the whole, as there are parts of the story that can be studied in depth behind the scenes. For example: what kind of person is this pickpocket? What is the mindset of the narrator driving the car when he is with the pickpocket? I think these are all things that could be explored on an ongoing basis.

G11

Review of Landlady

Reviewed by Sophia.X from G11 2022.4.27 5 stars(out of 5 stars)

"The Landlady," by Roald Dahl, tells a darksome story of a of 17-year-old boy and his first and also last stay in a bed and breakfast. At the start of the story, we meet 17-year-old Billy Weaver, who has travelled alone from London to Bath on the afternoon train. When he arrived in Bath, it was cold and late. The author goes on to tell us how young Billy was and that he had never been to Bath before. It's a horror story that builds tension, leading to a shocking conclusion. It's about 3,500 words long and was first published in The New Yorker magazine and in roald Dahl's collection of short stories, ‘Kiss, Kiss’, published in the early 1960s. This is the best of his many memorable short stories i would say!

The landlady here demonstrates a sinister characteristics whereas Billy is saturated with youthful innocence, recognizing things at face value. He did not delve into whether they had achieved much. The landlady seemed like a very positive and safe person by her passionate and considerate behaviors.

This story shows the theme of the disparity between appearance and reality and enlightens us should be more careful about others’ ‘kindness’ and master the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. I can feel that Roald Dahl would like to develop the theme that dangers lurk in ordinary places and potential risks are hidden and suddenly erupted .

There is a great point of this story, it was written in such a way that you quickly understand that the lady has done something to her former lodgers. We just don't know what exactly it is, and that is what makes the story fantastic! Dahl creates this sense of unease that is palpable. As a reader who really enjoy the details of story, i can always feel the strong queer feeling when the plot is going on. I couldn’t put this story down even late at night!

I would rather recommend both adults and children to read this story! It is so instructive for both youngsters and adults to build up more cautious and calm minds. The plot is simple and we don’t need to make many efforts on understanding the main points of the story. Overall, i really appreciate this story and hope you will enjoy as well!

4 stars. “The hitchhiker” was first published in Roald Dahl’s world-famous book, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar & Six more in 1977. The short story narrates a young writer heads to London in his brand new car and picks up a hitchhiker on his way. He encourages the protagonist to accelerate the car but they are caught by the cop, unfortunately. As a finger-smith, the hitchhiker steals the book so there is no evidence of the speeding.

Generally speaking, the story inherits Dahl’s traditional writing style. The author creates vibrant characters through his linguistic acrobatics like simile and metaphor. For example, he describes the hitchhiker with an unpleasant appearance by offering readers an animal image of him like “snorted” and “ratty”. He also highlights the theme--kindness versus punishment--to discuss justice and crime based on the plot. Just like his other similar works such as Dip in the pool, Roald Dahl combines realistic issues in his world of literature.

Overall, I recommend all fans of the short stories to take a glance at “The hitchhiker”. I can tell that this story is definitely one to read!

By Suni, April 27, G11

The Landlady

Book review by J

The landlady is a short story by Roald Dahl, which was collected in The Collected Short Stories of Roald Dahl and released in 1991. The short story describes Billy Weaver, a young man who travels to Bath in search of work, and finds something odd about the hotel and the landlady.

One of the main themes of the book is deception. The cosy atmosphere of this hotel, as well as the low charge for the high-quality service provided by the landlady, let bill put down his guard. The preconceived impression made Bill overlook some details, such as the words like black eyes, the

reality foreshadowed by these overlooked details is hidden beneath the surface, leaving the reader with some speculation about the end of Bill's death.

The characteristics of Bill and the landlady are distinctive. Bill is a dynamic and naive student, however, the landlady is good at disguise, apparently kind but actually she is cruel and insane. The plots keep twisting and readers learn more about the landlady’s secrets.

Overall, I think the short story, The Landlady, could get 8 out of 10 as the storyline is very exciting and it is full of reversals. Also, after reading The Landlady, if you find you are interested in this kind of story, The Lamb to the Slaughter is a good choice. Hope you enjoy your reading time.

An Unusual ‘Dip in the Pool’

A Brief Review of ‘Dip in the Pool’ by Roald Dahl

Rating: 7/10

This short story by the British writer Roald Dahl is originally from the book Someone Like You, which was published in 1953. The story revolves around a man bidding on a cruise ship, in hopes of winning a large deal of money to impress his wife. Mr Botibol is the protagonist in the story, he was very confident about how far the ship is going to travel at first, but later on, as the weather became good again, Mr Botibol thought he was sure to lose the bet unless he slows down the ship by jumping into the ocean, and in order to make sure someone sees him calling for help, he talked to an old lady in advance.

I think the story has a very good psychological description of the characters, especially how the protagonist was nervous but excited during the auction, and how he felt terrified after realizing he was going to lose the bet and was thinking about all the consequences that may come after. The twist in the plot was reasonable but unexpected, along with the dark humor to it just like the author’s other stories for adults, makes it a story worthy of reading. I would recommend it, but I think stories like The Land Lady and Lamb to the Slaughter also by Roald Dahl are better compared to this one.

Amy G11

<Lamb to the slaughter> is one of a crime novel wrote from <Short stories of Roald Dahl>, wrote by Roald Dahl. The story is talking about a perfect crime committed by the Mary Maloney, who is the main character of this story.

One day, Patrick Maloney went home and told Mary Maloney, his pregnant wife something very serious, which made her felt very angry and unwilling to forgive. Under the strong attack, Mary Maloney killed him by a big frozen leg of lamb. She decided to keep this as a secret. Mary put the lamb leg into the oven, she went out to brought some food for the dinner, then, she came home and saw the dead body of Patrick, she cried and called the police. Polices found out the cause of Mary's husband's death, but they cannot find the weapon. Mary begged the polices to eat the leg of lamb, she said that Patrick would let them eat it if he is still alive. After polices finished all the lamp in the kitchen, Mary began to giggle. Because they ate the weapon.

However, this is a good story, but I do not recommend it. Because this story may cause a bad influence to children, we can see that it doesn't say whether Mary was finally arrested or not. Mary’s action is quite wrong, and people may feel terrible while they read the story. I gave it the rating of 6 out of 10 for this story.

Dip In The Pool is one of articles written by Roald Dahl. "Dip in the Pool" is originally published in the 19 January 1952 edition of The New Yorker. It later appeared in the collection Someone Like You.

The main character of the short story is Mr Botibol. Other characters such as the purser and the elderly woman appear briefly. The setting of the story is on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean in January. The events take place during a couple of days. The story is the narrative follows a chronological structure. The story is told from the point of view of a third-person narrator.

Actually Dip In The Pool, which is a bitter little comedy. In my viewpoint, Botibol seems far more sympathetic than most of Dahl’s flawed characters. This might be due to values dissonance. It makes the character seem somewhat pathetic, as do his attempts to gain face. He spends money he doesn’t have buying drinks for passengers who can afford them, he takes medication for sea sickness while pretending to be an experienced traveler.

If give the story a rating, i may give A. From the short story that as readers I can learn that although we have the heart of gambler, do I have enough ability to bet.
