A Day At The Games

Retiarius
  • the only gladiator that did not wear a shield or carry a helmet

The Secutor
  • Carried a curved shield and the gladius
  • Protected by the helmet
  • Was called the chaser because he was usually paired with the retiarius
The Murmillo
  • Derived from a Greek word for a kind of fish
  • Likely an offshoot of secutor armed in the same way
The Hoplomachus
  • Recognizable because of his round shield
  • Usual opponent of the murmillo
  • This is all based on the ocean because they live near the ocean
Training
  • The manager of a gladiatorial troupe was called a lanista
  • Largest gladiator school was the Ludus Magnus which was right next to the Colosseum
  • Many lanista saw their troupe as an investment
Life after the arena
  • Gladiator fought for three to five years, if they survived they would be freed or have many for their freedom
  • Gladiators usually became instructors at gladiator school or would fight for money
