As a whole the class is primarily focused on the convenience factor that online education provides. There is certainly nothing wrong with that – online courses are convenient! But, I would encourage you to go beyond this in your review of what is possible in the online environment. Below are a few questions to get you all thinking about this

· What can the online environment bring to an Art History course offered by WATC?

· How can the online environment help a student who may not have the courage to speak up in class?

· Are there inherently unique things about teaching online that are just not available in the face to face environment?

In response to Trish's first question just to the left, I don't think WATC offers an Art History class . . . yet. But we do have Art Appreciation and Introduction to the Theater and I know first hand how exciting it is to include theatrical video clips in the course shell. Tours of costume shops and scene shops from regional theaters all over the nation, interviews with artists who have worked in the field for years, and bits and pieces of amazing productions like the stage show WAR HORSE that makes use of a three person puppet horse that is actually ridden in the show.

The following URL connects to a video on Richard Notkin, a ceramic artist featured in a documentary called Craft in America.

http://www.craftinamerica.org/shorts/richard-notkin-segment/

I like this 9:27 segment for many reasons. Notkins is very passionate about what he does and that comes across quite clearly. We see him working with the medium and also firing clay. He states his personal, internal reasons for creating art and they are strongly connected with the follies of humanity, primarily war. This gives the students a perspective beyond the mere “making” . . . they can see his creations as a need to communicate an important message. Notkin also talks about elements in his past that continue to influence his work.

We see some drawings and then the finished costumes. We see the wig area, craft shop with masks in the process of being refurbished, and a huge mechanized moving costume rack. We see the theater and some production shots. I think this kind of exposure is of incredible value in a Theater Appreciation class.
