To approach outdated literary texts, it is important to understand the context of the text and the historical background to grasp a better understanding that will lead you to the overall moral theme of the literary device.

  2. How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time? 
The meaning of the literary text can change throughout time based on the conflict that is happening during that specific time that the reader is reading it. For example, a person in the next generation could be facing a different challenge than current generations, which would mold the moral theme of the literary device to be different.

It can show the pain and dwelling the artist or a community felt during a specific time.   1. How does the structure or style of a literary text affect meaning? Consider how Morrison's stream-of-consciousness, shifting points of view, and use of analepsis and prolepsis impact the meaning of the novel.
    1. In the chapter where it goes into Beloved's stream of consciences, there are no punctuation anywhere and all the sentences clash against each other suggesting the her mind is chaotic and she is excited to have her mom, but also scared because she had to witness all the tragic things she mentions at such a young age. 

Time and Space

  1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.
    1. It is extremely crucial to obtain context of the setting and time period especially for this novel since it shifts back and forth between present and past perspectives, so there are two different "times"-- one being where slavery was crucial to economy and enslaved people were being treated like animals, and one where slavery was mainly abolished after the civil war. Sethe and the other characters lives two very different lives now, compared to the past.

    1. How does Chronicle offer insight into Columbian culture? Consider what we've learned about with machismo, marianismo, honor and the impact of colonialism.

    A: In the Columbian culture, we see this desire to keep up one's vanity and honor. The community is seen to be heavily involved in an individual's life as if the person doesn't maintain their honor, then the community turns their back on the person, making it even more desirable to keep up with social expectations, in fear of rejection. With men, they have to continue in "masculine" personality and activities such as taming hawks, shooting guns, and being able to handle butchering. On the other hand, women had to be raised to be the perfect wife while also maintaining their purity.

    Also, when Mary Anne first visit, she was the ideal type of woman: bubbly, feminine, and curvaceous, however now when she's completely altered her personality, due to the atmosphere of the war, she may be seen as ridiculous.

    How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?

    Although it is a graphic novel, it still holds meaning and a theme behind it. Although it isn't displayed through text and more picture, it's a universal text that can be easily understandable by many because, as Satrapi mentions, pictures are a universal language.

    What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?

    We see that as simple as wearing jewelry or jeans can be frowned upon since it isn't approved by their bible and divine figure. Such example would be when Rat Kiley and Curt Lemon was ignorant and reckless about their situation and that escalated to Rat's best friend, Lemon, dying due to a landmine.
