Introduction to the "Single Note"

In this padlet, we look to examine the concept of the stubborn single note. This note could be sought as the same one note that is just played throughout a limited amount of time through a song. This length of time can range from the start to the end of the song, or just a small portion of the song. However, most importantly to note, is that the single note is different from repetition. while the single note does indeed repeat itself, the concept is rather different from the concept of repetition. While repetition allows one to see within the gaps of the music, tell a different story; Ratliff views the single stubborn note as the artist itself in the song. Ratliff views the single note is the one note that stays true to the musician, and represents that artist. Throughout this padlet, you will find a few music examples that will exemplify the use of the single note obtained from Ratliff's playlist. Then you will find a few other songs; that were my own selected songs, that I felt utilized the concept of the single note well. And to top the padlet off, I will collect a few quotes and pictures that represent the concept of a single note.

Rated X- MIles Davis and the single note

In Miles Davis electric funk song, I believe the concept of single note is written throughout this song. When examining Ratliff's idea of the single note, he points out the single note is a consistent one note that takes you away from the song. Its the same echoed sound that is played throughout the background, but as he notes its just like a bell. When a bell chimes, it takes your attention away from everything else that is happening. And that is exactly what I feel like is displayed in this song. I agree with Ratliff's point of the concept of the single note, because it it the same sound that is resistant and derives your attention away blissfully. In this electric funk song, which is purely instrumental, the same bell ring is tapered into the background of the song. and while many transitions are played throughout the song, this single note remains steadily like a bell ringing in the background. That's why I believe this song exemplify's Ratliff's concept of the single note.

In this picture, the reason it signify's single note is because of the darkness that surrounds the change in the center. The darkness always remains constant in the background, even if things begin to change( such as the single note).

In this song, ODB utilizes a one note loop in the background of his rap song. Its the same note that persists throughout the whole song, and really symbolizes that stable bell chime Ratliff expresses. Furthermore, the single note signify's resistance in the song, because the pitch of it is so low in comparison to the rest of the pitches in the song. So as the song plays out, you just here one constant single chime resisting the change in the background. That's why I believe this example symbolizes the concept of a single note.

The reason this picture represents the concept of a single note, is because the blue colored leaves symbolize that resistance the single note displays. All the rest of the colors have a dullish tint to them, why this resisting single note color blue protrudes.

This quote from my mother, represents the concept of a single note, because it tells us that everything else can change around you; but always remain true to yourself. Just as all the other music changes a round a single note, that one single note still resists in a song.
