Knowing this, we know he kept it secret for a little while being the outlier at the school and being made fun of before he started giving her little gifts, he has the courage to let her  know, but she still avoided him and took part in making fun of him and she was also being also made fun of herself, Derek may have seen this as something they had in common and so one day he goes big one day and gives her a dozen roses. She not only denies him, but embarrasses him and the whole school ridicules him for it, so I'm guessing he has no energy left to try anymore. He never really talks to her ever, aside from the occasional acknowledgement nod in the hallway. Lila was the only person that voided the fact that he was different from everyone else, although she didn't personally like him. This lead to Derek's feelings towards her. 

In the middle he began to give Lila gifts in order to show his affection for her, but this backfired when all she did was reject and ignore him. This was disappointing for Derek so he went for a bolder move.

At the end Derek proposed flowers to Lila to show the greatest signs of respect and love in front of everyone. She completely denied the flowers, at which nearly pushed Derek to the breaking point, but before he could shed any tears Lila accepted the flowers. This had indicated that they weren't friends, nor anything greater than acquaintances. In the beginning, if I were Derek and I liked Lila I wouldn't care what Lila's friends had to say if I liked her. I would think that he felt unbothered but at the same time, he felt hurt.  In the middle of the story, Derek felt more confident. He felt that if he were to show more affection towards Lila she would notice him, or like him the same way he did to her. Finally, in the end, I think that Derek felt horrible, heartbroken, and shattered.  After Lila rejected him after he gave her the flowers he thought that it was a waste of his time to give Lila all of those gifts just for her to reject him. In addition, I don't think that Derek fully forgave Lila for rejecting him so harshly. He probably thought that it was best to give Lila her space and forget about what happened.

He was being so thoughtful with it, thinking that she might start talking to him one day instead of ignoring him. When he decided to give her the roses, his heart was racing, but when she threw it on the ground, he was heartbroken. He didn't care if he was crying in front of everyone, he just wanted to disappear. It must have been so embarrassing and she was also one of the only people who didn't tease him. After that day, he ignored her, as they went their separate paths, but he still wonders what would've happened if she just took the roses.
