This is a video that educates us a bit on the park. Haleakalā has very important cultural and spiritual significance to native Hawaiians, it is the highest point on the island of Maui, and therefore it is the closest to the heavens.

There are over 400 different species of plants that can be found inside Haleakalā. My favorite is the Koa tree. However due to decades of invasive species, and climate change there are not many plants atop Halealalā. One of the few that can be found at the summit is the Ahinahina. This plant can only be found on the island of Maui and became an endangered species in the early 90s. It has a lifespan of 5-90 years and evolved 5 million years ago from California Tar-weed.

Prior to becoming a national park Native Hawaiians lived and cared for the land for over 1,000 years. It was a good place to live because the weather is good, there is a constant water supply, and the land is ideal for growing crops such as the taro plant. When Haleakalā became a national park Native Hawaiians living there were pushed out and the land essiently stolen, leaving many sacred sites unguarded. The U.S. would go onto build a telescope on some of these sacred sites against Native Hawaiians' will.

Haleakala means House of Sun. It is the tallest point on Maui with the summit sitting at an elevation of 10,023 feet above sea level. The summit is a spiritual site for native Hawaiians due to it being the closest place to the gods on the island. To this day Haleakalā is considered wao akua.
