They were also lots of cree and metis people. Before the Europeans came they were first nation people in the boreal forest in small family groups. The Dene suline hunted fish and caribou in the area that is now Fort Chipewyan. Plants and animals were the only material to make clothing, shelter, tools, and medicine.The Dene Suline observed nature carefully.The lessons were passed on. The Dene Suline preserved food by drying or smoking this kept meat,fish,berries,and herbs from spoiling. In times of need, people often survived  because communities helped each other.

There was some concerns that he might not live cause of the infection. He spent some time in cumberland healing. While he was there he was trianing in navigation. Tompson recovered, but he walked with a limp for the rest of his life. He also recived blindness in the right eye. This was probably due by observing the sun without proper eye gear.
