The "Story of an Eyewitness" scope affects the events because it focuses on the whole city of San Francisco. The author describes the disaster on a large scale, "San Francisco at the present time is like the crater of a volcano where camped 10,000 refugees." The fact that 10,000 refugees were displaced shows how much ground the story covered. The author describes the disaster on a major scale, "Some of San Francisco finest structures were crumbled into ruins. The fact that some of the finest structures in San Francisco shows how terrible the disaster was. The author covered the story, "Letter from New Orleans: Leaving Desire" with a narrow scope and focuses on one area, a poor town called ninth ward. First, the hurricane hit the worst place in the city, where all the poor families live. The fact that a little town got hit bye the hurricane covered a narrow scope. The author uses a narrow scope because it talks about one man and his dog that he had to leave behind to save himself. Both text differ in scope but are effective because they show how much damage both of the disasters make.

The scope affects the events that have been told by focusing on the whole San Francisco area. "San Francisco is gone. Nothing remains of it but memories and a fringe of dwelling houses on its outskirts. Its industrial section is wiped out. Its business section is wiped out. Its social and residential section is wiped out. The factories and warehouses, the great stores and newspaper buildings, the hotels and the palaces of the nabobs, are all gone." The author Jack London wants you to know this so he can emphasize the amount of destruction. "It was dead calm. Not a flicker of wind stirred. Yet from every side wind was pouring in upon the city. East, west, north, and south, strong winds were blowing upon the doomed city. The heated air rising made an enormous vacuum." Jack London says this because he wants you to know that the fire didn't stay in one spot it spread across the whole city. On the other hand the author in "Letter from New Orleans: leaving desire the author projects a narrow scope by focusing on one area of New Orleans. In the story, the author States "Bunny Friend, in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The house was built of wood, with white siding and peach trim." Jon lee Anderson wants you to realize that they are only focusing on ninth ward. Also, another example that shows a narrow scope is "trapped survivors and for what rescuers were calling “holdouts”—residents who didn’t want to leave their homes—in one of the poorest and worst-hit parts of the city, the Ninth Ward, in eastern New Orleans." The author is trying to express how many people where they and that they needed to get out or they would have gotten sick from the water. Overall, both texts differ in scope but are effective because they show how much damage they both.

The story of an eyewitness has a broad scope has a broad scope of events and a widespread of events. In the story the evidence shows the destruction with fires earthquakes that had destroyed the city. The city was told about how the the buildings were destroyed. On the other hand leaving desire gives us a narrow scope of the flood and gives us more personal info. We only learned about a few people who struggled with the disaster such as Lionel Petrie and the greens Lionel had lost his dog and the greens lost their store. This narrow scope helps us care about this more because the story is mainly on the greens and Lionel Petrie. Inconclusion is that both stories talk about the struggles with the disaster with different scopes and they both convey about different disasters that happened.

This explains that thousands of people fled from the fire so they could live or survive. This was found at line 197. "San Francisco's finest buildings were crumbled into ruins." Lines 36, 37, 38. The scope of the story "Letter from New Orleans: Leaving Desire" is narrow compared to the story "Story of an Eyewitness." It mainly focuses on the Ninth Ward. The hurricane hit The Ninth Ward the hardest, where all the poor families were living. Both texts differ in scope size, but are effective because they show how much damage both of the Natural Disasters cause.

Nothing remains of it but memories and a fringe of dwelling houses on its outskirts. Its industrial section is wiped out. Its business section is wiped out. Its social and residential section is wiped out. The factories and warehouses, the great stores and newspaper buildings, the10 hotels and the palaces of the nabobs, are all gone. Remains only the fringe of dwelling houses on the outskirts of what was once San Francisco." This evidence shows that they are talking about everyone in the area and this author wrote and had a wide scope. The author also said "It was dead calm. Not a flicker of wind stirred. Yet from every side wind was 30 pouring in upon the city. East, west, north, and south, strong winds were blowing upon the doomed city. The heated air rising made an enormous vacuum." and this proves that the author used a wide scope for this story, too. On the other hand, the author of "Letter from New Orleans: Leaving Desire" used a narrow scope in the story to tell about one area of the disaster. In the story, the author stated, "Bunny Friend, in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The house was built of wood, with white siding and peach trim." He stated this because he was creating a narrow scope for the story.

Kolton Weaver
Ms.Cronrath
ELA Period 1
January 20, 2017
Main Point 1
Each author use a different scope to discuss events because the scope in " The Story of an Eyewitness" is broad, and the scope in "Leaving Desire" is a narrower scope. First, " The Story of an Eyewitness" has a broad scope. It is more widespread and not as personal as " Letter From New Orleans: Leaving Desire". We get more details of how the city was destroyed and affected. We're given many different details about the whole city and what's going on. We hear about how many people are evacuating and how much of the city the fire has gone through and destroyed. We hear about how many buildings were destroyed having only their rubble left where they used to stand in the booming city of San Francisco. The author describes,"In that direction stood the tottering walls of the Examiner Building, the burned-out Call Building, the smoldering ruins of the Grand Hotel, and the gutted, devastated, dynamited Palace Hotel.". The author uses imagery like this to show how much of the city is gone and destroyed; the only thing left is the tottering walls and rubble from buildings lost to the devastating fire. On the other hand, "Letter from New Orleans: Leaving Desire" is more personal and only focuses on one character. "Leaving Desire" gives us a narrow scope of the flood in New Orleans caused by hurricane Katrina. This story more personal and doesn't give us a wide range of description. We're focused mainly on one person and a small area instead of a whole city. We read about a man named Lionell Petrie and his struggles with this disaster. Petrie faces the struggle of choosing to leave his dog behind at his flooded house, he makes these choices so he can get back to his family who evacuated the area before the flood. He also faced the struggle of being racially discriminated at his job in New Oeleans at a welding company. This story is personal and makes us care for Petries struggles he's facing. Petrie also faces the personal struggle that his aunt might die because last time something like this happened she promised that she wasn't evacuating the next time. Knowing all this about Petrie makes the story very personal and emotional. All in all, the two stories contrast by their scopes but they compare in using details to make us care and feel emotional about the disasters the people are facing in San Fransisco and New Orleans. " Letter From New Orleans Leaving Desire ", uses a narrow scope all throughout the story, it's very personal and emotional, we only focus on one character and his struggles with the disaster. On the other hand, " Story of an Eye Witness", uses a broad scope and we get a very wide range of the whole city and all of the destruction done by the fire, this story is more descriptive but still emotional.
