Past encounters between the global powers will prevent any trust in the near future. Their relationship continue to be hostile. Many Americans will not forget the fact that Russia was part of the soviet union, and the threats made from Russia during the Cold War. As long as Vladimir Putin holds office, there will not be a change as he embraces the history of the soviet era. The rest of Americans, mostly ones who didn't experience the Cold War era, remain hopeful and optimistic. The U.S has other priorities now other than building a relation with Russia. The relation may be impossible one that may never come into existence.

Nuclear Weapons

One of the many reasons why the relationship between the U.S and Russia continues to be hostile is due the race of nuclear weapons. During the Cold War era, they were at highest peak, each having an abundance of nuclear weapons. Many treaties were created after the Cold War to limit the spread of nuclear weapons. Despite the constant threats between each other, they knew deterioration could not be allowed to degenerate war. in 2010 former president Obama signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START) treaty that reduced the total of warheads to 1,500 for each country on no more than 800 launchers. Treaties with the U.S have helped reduced the Russian arsenal from its Soviet-era peak of about 40,000 warheads to approximately 4,300.

Owning a vast amount of land is Russias proudest accomplishment. However owning a large territory can cause a variety of issues as previous explained. An internal problem they have is imposing the Russian culture on the conquered areas.

The Russia and the U.S continue being a complex relationship. However, the U.S tries to develop a relation with Russia because they are an asset to global powers. Russia in the other hand knows its energy is being exported vastly and may one day eliminate its main economy contrition. If they keep isolating themselves from the international powers, they may one day suffer an economy collapse. The U.S have helped on a numerous of occasions to only be pushed back by the centralized government of Russia. Post-communist Russia has gone from a friend of the United States to a rival under President Vladimir Putin. There has been signs of possible peaceful relation with President Trump but the distrust still lingers.

The soviet replaced the Russian empire who struggled to survive in a time of crisis. The soviet became one of the biggest and most powerful nations in the world. At the time, the soviets and the U.S were the only global powers left after the World War II. Russia and the U.S being the only powers may have been the reason for the start of the Cold War. A communism country who tried to compete with the west, and only failed in doing so. The soviet did not support its people, rather the Union had curtailed the free speech and human rights of its citizens.

The U.S has had a complex relationship dating back the colonization period. Russia was against British during the revolution. Also, they collaborated during World War II to eliminate the Nazis regime. Russia continued to be a difficult international power to comprehend. It has been a dynamic country who struggles to find a place in international powers despite having rich resources. As the article states, Russia has been a Roller coaster ride, both internally and in its foreign relations. For these reason, the U.S is divided by how to approach Russia in certain policies. Ever since the soviet union dominated in Russia, they have remained a mystery to the U.S.
