Everyone was crying even the teachers and we were all so scared. She didn't come back to school for a year. We went on trips to other countries on a monthly basis but we'd never lived anywhere other than Iran. the rules are so different in both countries. one of the major ones was that women have to wear hijab in Iran. When I first came to Canada it was so weird and relieving for me to see women with their hair out. The driving rules are also very different in both countries which were very strange for me. In Iran we drive so fast I always loved it, when we came here there were so many red lights and so many speed limits that it was weird for me. Moving to Canada taught me that I have to adapt to change because if I don't, I'll be the only one that gets hurt. I also learned to embrace new opportunities. I also became more independent; in Iran, my mom would take me everywhere because she thought it wasn't safe to leave me alone. I always thought of my school as fun because I liked my friends. My parents sent me to a private school because public schools in Iran were very strict and they ruined kids. They thought that if I was in a private school I would have it easier which was totally true. Schools in Iran are separate for boys and girls; girls must wear hijab with their uniforms. My first day at Owen Public School was very strange because I had never seen boys and girls at the same school. It was also very weird to me that we didn't have to wear uniforms. For academics, I was way ahead of other people in my class because schools in Iran teach you hard stuff from the beginning. I didn't really have to try in schools until grade 9. Going to school in Canada taught me collaboration and new friend-making skills. I was taught to become more open about my opinions. I don't know why but my biggest fear was losing my friends, and getting bad grades. maybe if I wasn't so scared my transition would've been easier. I will definitely admit that other than the accident I had in elementary school, this was the scariest. High school taught me to adapt to change; it also taught me not to hold on to past memories and move on to make new ones. I think one of the biggest reasons why I was so sad in grade 10 was that I wanted everything to go back to the way they used to be (grade 9).
