Do some research on the internet to find a problem (an economic injustice or a human rights violation) of interest around which you believe a global social movement has formed. Use this space to share resources you have found and ideas for what problem your group might focus on this semester. Be sure to include your name on your post so we can be sure all members of the group contribute.

I have followed this movement for a couple of years, where I was first introduced to it during my Social Problems class at GRCC. We did a group presentation on this topic because it greatly captured my attention. The philosophy criticizes the use of money as being a means to enslavement of humanity and source of greed. Money being not essential to human life and prosperity, but a creation of man. The philosophy generated a model that allows for a functional, and prosperous society without trading tangible money, but instead with contribution of time, work, and resources. The movement website includes a lot of information, and also I have posted a video from the founder (Michael Tellinger, Scientist, Author, and Anthropologist), originating from South Africa, that has spread to every continent on the planet.

I have followed this movement ever since hearing about Harvey Weinstein. I find it very intriguing because things of this nature were covered up or simply not talked about for a long time. We are now in a much different time period and it is refreshing to see this movement gain so much traction. I would find it interesting to focus specifically on Hollywood actors and actresses that have spoken out and been a part of the #metoo movement. Let me know how we should narrow things down to a topic to focus on!

Okay, so I've gave exploring global social movements another research shot. I've came across some interesting findings on Human Trafficking as a global social movement. What I think is so interesting about this topic is that it is both a movement (albeit underground) to continue this operation, as we see here in Grand Rapids, and there is also a movement in response to this issue against Human Trafficking. Since we ran into some issues with the #MeToo movement, but expressed mutual interest in issues surrounding sex and gender, I found this! Check out the research article I found =>

Those that are desperate there by get lured and deceived by traffickers because they want to get out of the country by all means.

Extreme greed for wealth: Some people want to amass great wealth or get rich quick. They end up in the hands of traffickers.

Poor economic system: This may cause citizens to want to travel abroad for better standard of living.

Unwholesome business gains: Trafficking has somehow become a massive business industry in the world, thereby luring individuals with criminal minds to join.

Low self esteem: Some people do not have self esteem either they are not educated (illiterates) or want to have a better life and they may end up leaving the country by all means possible.

The search for greener pasture: Some people believe that traveling abroad is the only way one can make ends meet in all aspects of life.

Poverty: Some families with large number of children maybe poor and might not be able to cater for all the needs of their children. They end up giving out some of their children to people as maids and this way some of their children may fall into the hands of traffickers.

APA citation:
Human Trafficking - Meaning, Causes and Effects of Human Trafficking.

Hey friends, I watched the video the librarian posted and she made a great point on looking at social media for leaders and even smaller steps that are taken to help the cause and educate people about them. I think that these governments and organizations could help us in a way because these organizations are helping with the fight but these governments are putting in policies and help these organizations or make organizations to fight this problem.

WHO? (Organizations)

UNICEF- A children's fund organization that works within the countries of Bangladesh, Iraq, Mexico, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen and many others. There are global offices in Florence, Copenhagen, Budapest, Geneva, Tokyo and Brussels with headquarters in New York. They are a huge organization that puts funded and education in helping the victims of Trafficking. They are a huge organization but they only have a segment that works with the fight to end trafficking. I will keep on researching them for more information but they seem to be a huge global organizations.

UNICEF. (n.d.) Child Trafficking, UNICEF Retrieved from:https://www.unicefusa.org/mission/protect/trafficking

RAPHA HOUSE- I don't know if this one will be of any help to us and our website but I thought I would put it down and I would get your feedback on it. There are multiple "safe houses" around the world and in countries that I have came across during research. This particular house has multiple locations within Haiti, Cambodia, and Thailand. I think this source would help us because trafficking that most people talk about is women being the victims but this source is specifically children and how these places can help children almost reintegrate into the world after being trafficked sexually (Rapha House, 2018).

Rapha House.

Sex trafficking is an issue addressed by the United Nations. The Palermo Protocol, was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2004). This protocol established three primary methods of fighting trafficking, known as the three P’s: (1) prosecution of traffickers, (2) prevention programming, and (3) protection of trafficking victims. The Palermo Protocol has been ratified by 166 countries, but effective implementation of policies remains controversial and challenging .
With the Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP report), the U.S. government has taken the lead on monitoring and documenting antitrafficking efforts around the world. The TIP report classifies countries into three tiers based on their level of antitrafficking efforts and numbers of trafficking victims (U.S. Department of State, 2014). The results of this annual report indicate that 164 countries are making commendable efforts toward eradicating trafficking through policies, programming, and services (

APA Citation:
Orme, J., & Ross-Sheriff, F.
Macedonia- Combat Trafficking

In this article, it lays out the problem of Human Trafficking through Macedonia. They explain how Macedonia is the hub for trafficking people in and out to different countries. Because of this the legalization realized they needed to combat Trafficking by taking a stand with some laws. They soon adopted the United Nations
Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, by signing this they were putting a law into act. A few years later they added Article 418-a, "Trafficking in Persons" which stated that there were to be consequences if someone was caught trafficking another within the countries that signed this code. This is just one of many governments that have taken the strategy of signing codes or signing laws to help combat the trafficking issue.

Rafał Woźnica. I think that this could help because even though a lot of big time organizations are coming up with strategies and tractics to combat the problem like this article says "It’s a community effort and it is important to recognize and report it" because ultimately it is a community effort and even the slightest little thing you do or someone else does could save a life or two [or more].

Australia's law enforcement has seen a huge issue of human trafficking throughout the country in the recent years. Legal experts are looking at laws and how to improve on the law to better protect survivors and their families. Normally visas were offered to on a bases if the victims helped law enforcement arrest, prosecute and convict traffickers- now with the update to that laws experts have looked at how to reduce stress on victims, assure that their personal safety is kept and there is compensation for helping catch traffickers. Australia's work to the visa framework have made it able for "victims of trafficking and salvery on any valid Australian visa... able to access" the Support for Trafficked People Program (STPP) under Australian law and legislation.

This would be a good example for a tactic that governments are taking. Not only are they thinking more about victims and how they can help them and support them but they are also trying to have victims help prosecute traffickers. By updating the law they are saying that they do truly care about victims but they are also saying that if they help law enforcement, their safety is put on the top, and that stress levels will be minimal.

Also they were successful with the update of the laws because 17 traffickers were prosecuted and they expect many more to be (have to remember that this article was published in 2016 and the law was updated in 2009, also these court cases could last months or years depending on the court.)

Deanna, Davy.

I'm going to focus on law from around the world, to compare and contrast their strategies to combat sex trafficking.

Cambodia:
Law on the Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation, 2008.
Neatened to align with the Palmero protocols of the UN, which makes the sale, purchase, or attempted transaction of prostitution illegal. While the goal was to combat sex-trafficking, it is so incredibly vague, that prostitution is not defined at all, and the status of consent is irrelevant. Meaning, those caught or suspected of being involved in a sexual transaction are equally prosecuted. The largest problem with this, is that Cambodia is one of the poorest countries on earth, meaning it is hard to discern who is forced into sex-labor, and who is voluntary due to a lack of choice for economic purposes. Consequently, raids of brothels and the like result in abuse and unjust prosecution off victims to the sex-trafficking pandemic, and discourages victims from reaching out for help.
https://www.hhrjournal.org/2015/04/conflicting-rights-how-the-prohibition-of-human-trafficking-and-sexual-exploitation-infringes-the-right-to-health-of-female-sex-workers-in-phnom-penh-cambodia/
Conflicting Rights: How the Prohibition of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation Infringes the Right to Health of Female Sex Workers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Although the Philippines is considered a top level complaint country with UN Palmero policy, the act of 2003 hardly combats the purchase of women via marriage certificates. This is largely due to a lack of judicial action. The problem being due to a scarcity of law enforcement agents, and judges in the country. It is believed, that this policy would be much more impact if the Philippines had adequate personnel to handle the large traffic of cases that need to be addressed.
https://womennewsnetwork.net/2009/07/29/filipinatrafficking814/
Team, W. The approach of "laze fare" unless necessary (i.e, when human rights are imposed upon), emphasizes the fact the sex for sale has been a historical phenomena that is likely never to be eradicated. This police includes; Ban on Street Transaction: Selling sex without the proper clearance is prohibited and punishable by the law, Permit Systems: Prostitutes must register themselves as such, and be approved through the state to sell sex. This is meant to "regulate" sex operations reducing the amount of transactions that occur below the radar, Permit for Brothels: Monitor the saftey, compliance, and legality of brothels., STD Testing: To ensure the health of women involved.
https://www.beobachtungsstelle-gesellschaftspolitik.de/f/958037694b.pdf
“W. Denmark has also established a National Action Plan Against Trafficking and the Danish Anti-Trafficking Centre, which assists trafficking victims and helps them get treatment and assistance from authorities."

In this article they explain the main problem which is the Human Trafficking all over the world but also in the beginning they state that the problem can also be the different definitions of human trafficking. This is because Justice systems define trafficking and create narratives how it is created and what leads to it. The Problem that It gets easier and easier to get away with it because the laws can actually catch and prosecute these criminals because the law is stated in a particular way that they can get away with it. The Justice system also does not define the problem in a way to cover all trafficking. The article also states how trafficking is also driven by such factors as the economy and cultural factors.

This could help our page because it touch bases on what drives trafficking. I know a lot of articles focus on profiling the pimps and why they do what they do but some trafficking is cause because people can not fulling live a life without having to get help from a "pimp". For example I have read examples where people sell kids so that they can have money for food and such for living or they give up their labor just to be able to be taken "under their wing" so to say and they work for the pimp with slave labor. Also the article is from another country : Nigeria.

Citation
Department OF Sociology and Anthropology (2018).
