Knocking on wood is thought to come from the folklore of the ancient Indo-Europeans, or possibly people who predated them, who believed that trees were home to various spirits. Knocking on tree trunks may have served to rouse the spirits and call on their protection, but it could have also been a way of showing gratitude for a stroke of good luck.
The Monkeys Paw by W.W. Jacobs a story about “Superstition”. Do you care yourself automatically saying “bless you” or even knocking on wood after saying you didn’t mean too? I believe that superstitious and luck are very closely associated together in a way that is because people do believe that sometimes when superstitious happens, it’s something lucky. I also think that this “magic” kind of thing that happens in our lives sometimes can be “imagination” and just something that as American’s have come up with and nowhere close to the truth but people still continue to believe that this stuff really happens. In the Monkeys Paw, when the protagonist decided it was okay and wish upon the paw and say “I wish for two hundred pounds” and goes to bed thinking that nothing will happen and the next day he got something that he definitely didn’t wish for when his son died, I believe that happened because when you take a wish for granted or anything for granted it will back fire on you and ruin something you already have.

Black cats

Norman and Germanic people originated the idea of a black cat crossing your path brought bad luck and believed that a sighting of a black cat was a sign that a death would soon occur. They are great match makers and often have golden eyes even they are associated with bad luck.
In the story he says that he is not only a murder, but he will also not admit to what he did. Another quote is “That animal that caused me to commit this terrible crime.” These quotes prove that his perception is that the cat's the one to blame, and the reason his wife is dead, but in reality it’s his fault. In real life people that have done something bad, whether it's really bad or not very bad admit to their crime and don’t blame people that have nothing or just a bit to do with it. Anyone that has a distorted sense of reality would probably blame someone else, because in their world that's who they blame but in reality it’s not the whole truth at all. In the story the monkey's paw people might think that Mr.white from the monkey's paw has the most distorted sense of reality because he is very greedy and not a doesn’t even notice a risk when he wished for 200 pounds. This is because after the man told him that the paw was nothing but trouble. The man also threw the paw in the fire and Mr.White still grabbed it which proves that his perception of reality is that he is more concerned about what the paw does than his loved ones.
