Why do YOU need a Rough ER

The main purpose of the rough endoplasmic reticulum is to produce proteins. It also is involved with folding, quality control and despatch of some proteins. An example of this can be seen in pancreatic cells that synthesize the protein insulin in the Rough ER and secretes the hormones in the bloodstream. The polypeptide chains grow from a bound ribosome then is puts into the ER lumen through a pore formed by a protein complex. Once the polypeptide enters the ER lumen it folds into its functional shape. The ER lumen is surrounded by secretary proteins which are proteins with carbohydrates that are covalently bonded to them. The secretary proteins depart from the ER wrapped in membranes of vesicles that bud-like bubbles from a region called the Transition ER. The Rough ER not only makes secretary proteins but also is a membrane factory for the cells. It does this by growing in place by adding membrane proteins and phospholipids to its own membrane

The Rough ER is located in the endoplasmic reticulum. The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum has ribosomes on the outer surface that are studded out and this is what makes it look rough. The Rough ER also has ribosomes that are attached to the cytoplasmic side of the nuclear envelopes. The Rough Er is composed of cisternae, tubules and vesicles. The cisternae is made up of flattened membrane disks.

Abnormalities in the rough ER structure and function are only associated with certain diseases in humans. When the RER does not function there is an accumulation of misfolded proteins that would normally be made into the cytosol, where they are broken down. This can result in the stress of the rough ER which will lead to cell dysfunction and cell death.

My organelle is the BEST because it produces proteins that are mandatory for the function and survival of cells in your body. The rough ER also is important because it is a membrane factory in for your cells. My organelle is better than any other because without it you simply die!!
