Knowledge will determine power, not status.

This theme is shown throughout "The Tempest" and is seen specifically in the noblemen. In the beginning of the script, during the tempest summoned by Ariel, the noblemen treated the sailors poorly. When the sailors are working to save their lives and the boat, the noblemen are angered that they are being bossed around when they believe that they have more power. Due to this anger, the nobles such as Antonio swear at the sailors: "Hang, cur, hang, you whoreson, insolent / noisemaker! We are less afraid to be drowned than / thou art" (Shakespeare 1.1.44-46). Not only does Antonio verbally abuse the boatswain, but he also says that he is less fearful of drowning than the crew is, meaning that he is still viewing his status as a protective layer that will not allow him to drown.

Having a sheltered perspective will impact the ability to make reality-founded decisions.

This theme is shown throughout The Tempest specifically in the romance of Ferdinand and Miranda. Miranda's ignorance caused by a limited perspective is shown when she says, "There’s nothing ill can dwell in such a temple. / If the ill spirit has so fair a house, / Good things will strive to dwell with ’t" (Shakespeare 1.2.552-554). Miranda is so blinded by Ferdinand's attractiveness that she believes that nothing bad could dwell within him, which directly shows that her perspective inhibits her from seeing the reality of the situation: she doesn't know anything about Ferdinand. Because Miranda has lived on the island with her father since the age of three; she has only seen her father, spirits, monsters, and fairies, so seeing a man for the first time leads to rushed affection and solid decisions dissipating.

Act 2 Theme - Power

The demand for something gives power to the suppliers.

This theme is displayed in The Tempest within Act 2 when Caliban is introduced to alcohol. Caliban has never seen wine and considers it to be ethereal and from the gods. When Stephano and Triculo are drinking, Caliban sees this, and though he has work, is tempted. He begins to view the two men as gods because of their ownership of alcohol. Caliban shows this by saying, "These be fine things, an if they be not / sprites. That’s a brave god and bears celestial liquor. / I will kneel to him" (Shakespeare 2.2.120-123). Because of the demand for wine, power is given to the suppliers (Stephano and Triculo), which is taken advantage of by allowing for Caliban to "show thee every fertile inch o’ th’ island, and. . . kiss thy foot. . . prithee, be [Caliban's] god" (Shakespeare 2.2.154-155). The power given by alcohol, gives Stephano and Trinculo power that they manipulated to make Caliban think that they are gods and then use this misconception to know more of the island.

Act 3 Theme - Perspective

Perspective is the basis for strong decisions, emotion is the basis for weak ones.

This theme is shown in Act 3 when Miranda and Ferdinand are conversing. Ferdinand requests Miranda's name and then quickly professes his love. Miranda has not known another person besides her father besides Ferdinand, limiting her perspective to what romantic love is, what makes a good man, and how relationships such as this are to proceed. After Ferdinand makes his love known, Miranda asks for Ferdinand's hand in marriage by saying, "And prompt me, plain and holy innocence. / I am your wife if you will marry me. / If not, I’ll die your maid. To be your fellow / You may deny me, but I’ll be your servant / Whether you will or no" (Shakespeare 3.1.99-104). Miranda asks to be prompted for marriage, which Ferdinand quickly accepts. The acceptance of both people for a long-term relationship shows their lack of perspective. Neither are aware of what love truly is due to having never been exposed to it before. This leads to rushed decisions based on emotions, caused by a limited perspective.

Love and respect have greater power in a relationship than lust.

This theme is displayed throughout Act 4, specifically in Ferdinand and Miranda's relationship. In this Act, the couple progresses in the seriousness of the relationship. In the beginning, the perspective of both was limited due to a lack of comparison to other people. However, though this remains true, their relationship has grown strong as they have spent more time together. Ferdinand's perspective of Miranda has developed from seeing her and falling in love to knowing her and remaining in love, which is shown when he says:

"For quiet days, fair issue, and long life, / With such love

as ’tis now, the murkiest den, / The most opportune

place, the strong’st suggestion / Our worser genius can

shall never melt / Mine honor into lust to take away."

     (Shakespeare 4.1.26-30)

Hence, one of the sole reasons that the relationship remains strong is its foundation. Because Ferdinand's character is displayed to be respectful and without lust for Miranda, the relationship is founded purely on love and regard for the other person.
