Automated vehicles, otherwise known as self driving cars, are designed to sense their environment and move accordingly, with little or no human intervention. Lots of major car manufacturers have already started producing prototypes and it is predicted that driverless cars will be released to the public by 2021.

How do Automate vehicles work?

Automated vehicles use sensors to create an internal map of their surroundings. The vehicles use up to 64 lasers to determine distance and depth to create a 3D virtual map of their surroundings. Software then processes these inputs and sends them to the vehicles actuators which control acceleration, braking and steering. The software is made up of complex coding and algorithms to help the vehicle follow traffic rules and navigate obstacles. They will also have the ability to communicate to other vehicles using radio transmissions to prevent accidents and traffic.

Problems Automate Vehicles Solve and How They Might Change Society (Positively

Nearly 1.3 million people die in road crashes each year, on average thats 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled. Having automate vehicles could reduce that number, as software could prove less prone to mistakes than humans. Automate vehicles would prevent crashes caused by intoxication, texting while driving or just bad judgement.

Automated driving would also bring the benefit of reduced traffic. The automate vehicles can communicate with each other using radio transmissions. They will be able to move as a group and reduce unnecessary accelerating and braking. Making the traffic flow better and become less congested. Less traffic will help improve peoples health as research has proven that traffic jams can cause rises in blood pressure, depression and anxiety.

Issues With Automate Vehicles and How they Might Change Society (Negatively)

Environmental impacts are a serious concern, and a major uncertainty. Accessible, affordable, and convenient self-driving cars could increase the total number of miles driven each year. If these vehicles are powered by petrol, then gas emissions could skyrocket causing decimating damage to the environment and climate.

There is also the dilemma of how automated vehicles should be programmed in an ethics point of view. What should a driverless car be programmed to do in a situation where an accident is inevitable. Should the car sacrifice the drivers own life to save a group of pedestrians? And if so, who is going to buy a car that will sacrifice them to save someone else?
Automated vehicles will also cause millions of people to lose their jobs. People such as taxi drivers, truckers, Uber drivers and many other jobs will be no longer needed.
