The tone set is a hostile attitude, which affects the reader by feeling uncomfortable.

Joseph - strange, stubborn

I believe the author is reffering to communication skills, and how we perceive reality.

The book has improved my judgement on how reality was in the 19th century, and has also allowed me to not only see hostility towards the workers (maids, nannies, stable keeper etc.) but that the people who had hired them in also was respectful towards them to some extend.

Stories are nowadays used in an educational setting by being presented as different scenarios to be solved or researched.

The idea that there is only a set path to follow.

Stories act as a counterbalance to causal determinism because by creating alternative realities, we imagine different causes or ways things may have occured, which allows us to be more open-minded.

JFK managed to narrow down two plans they discussed instead of following their first instinct.

Stories become helpful because it reminds us of options, broadening rather than deepening our focis, and also causes us to ponder cause and effect.

The ability to tell and understand stories gives us an advantage over technology because throughout different realities we manage to create choices and gain a sense of predictiability on what to come, which animals nor machines have yet to master.
