This activity developed by Caroline Morel strikes me as an excellent starting point for a unit plan to approach the topic "Censorship" in my Civic Education lessons. Considering that my country's social history is deeply marked by decades of censorship under the Salazar political regime, finding similarities would be an interesting challenge. In Portugal, Salazar used censorship and a secret police to quell opposition for about 30 years. Politicians, artists, writers, scholars, anyone who attempted some sort of opposition against the untouchable leading political class would have to be very subtle, otherwise a long lasting imprisonment would be their fate.
For that reason, the idea of being under the oppression of censorship mechanisms and finding strategies to dodge them would be the kind of creative task my students would be glad to solve.
