Victoria's Secret Doesn't Want Plus-Size or Trans Women Walking the Runway - Current Event Social Media Report Assignment by Mariah Miscio

Following the latest Victoria's Secret fashion show, a new interview from Vogue surfaced with the Chief Marketing Officer of L Brands (parent company of Victoria's Secret), Ed Razek. He is part of the casting team who chooses the models for each show. In this interview, he stated that they've considered putting a transgender or plus-size model in the show, but decided against it as it's not who they "market" their lingerie to and that the show is supposed to be a fantasy entertainment special. He also labelled critics as haters who want too much diversity in the show. Following this interview, Victoria's Secret has received plenty of backlash from customers throughout various social media platforms.

Tweet - Statement from Victoria's Secret

Following the backlash they received after the interview, Victoria's Secret tweeted this statement from Ed Razek, who apologizes for his insensitive words and states that they would cast a transgender model, but like many others they just didn't make it. He also states that it was never about gender. However, I find it interesting how he didn't mention anything about what he said in regards to casting plus-size models in their show. Many people in the replies are saying that he shouldn't have to apologize while others are claiming his apology wasn't good enough. I personally think that it was a weak apology, but only time will tell whether or not Victoria's Secret will ever actually cast a trans or plus-size model in their show.

In this Facebook post made by Stephanie Chan, she comments on the fact that not only does Victoria's Secret have an issue with plus-size or genderfluid models, but that they also seem to have an issue with their lack of casting women of colour as models. Majority of their models you see in their advertisements are white. I definitely agree with this post because while there is definitely more diversity than there used to be, there is still very little representation. While you could argue that Victoria's Secret shouldn't have to market to trans or plus-size women, there is no reason at all as to why they can't have models that are of different races and ethnicities.

In this Facebook post made by Leara Latchford, she states that she understands that Victoria's Secret has a particular look and body type they advertise with, but after reading how they don't want to market to plus-size women, she says she won't be shopping with them anymore, which is disappointing because she's shopped there for years. She states that she doesn't want to continue giving money to a brand that doesn't support her body type. She also mentions that there are other brands that are less expensive that actually support women of all body types. While conducting research, I have noticed that there are many women who have said that they'll no longer be shopping at Victoria's Secret, just like this woman.

In this tweet, this user responds to the issue by saying that she doesn't see an issue with Victoria's Secret not wanting trans or plus-size women in their fashion show, adding on that they should be the ones able to choose who represents their brand and that they shouldn't have to accommodate to what everyone wants. I can understand where they're coming from, but I don't necessarily agree with what they're saying. Representation is important and more than just white, cis-gendered, thin women exist and buy from their brand. I think it's important that that is taken into consideration while promoting their brand.

In this YouTube video, she makes a really interesting point. She says that Victoria's Secret has never used trans models or plus-sized models before in their show, so why would they start doing that now just to appease a certain group of people because they're upset? They're not just going to suddenly change how they promote their brand because people want them to. But she also says that Victoria's Secret does have lingerie for everybody so why can't they use different types of models for their fashion show? I think this video makes a lot of very relevant points that I can agree with.

In this tweet, this user posts photos of them in a bikini, stating that they are trans and plus-sized and that they can work a bikini as well as any of Victoria's Secret's models can. I have come across many of other posts of women embracing who they are in their underwear as part of a movement to show Victoria's Secret that they exist. I think it's great that these people can take what was said about their body type and turn it into something positive and empowering. I think Victoria's Secret could really improve their brand if they acknowledged more than just the "standard" body type.

In this video posted on Twitter, it says that nearly 10,000 people have signed a petition to boycott the 2018 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, saying that they won't be tuning in to watch this year because it doesn't celebrate all shapes and sizes of women. It also states that the Victoria's Secret CEO, Jan Singer, is reportedly leaving the company because of poor sales, most likely due to the recent backlash. It also talks about the #WeAreAllAngels campaign, which encourages women to post photos of themselves, that was started by another brand called ThirdLove in order to protest Victoria's Secret. I find it interesting that so many women are teaming up to embrace their beauty and fight for what they think is right.

In this tweet, this user points out that Victoria's Secret was a company started by a straight man and made to enforce the male's perception of the ideal woman, while they also promote that idea to other women. They seem to think that it's not very surprising that Victoria's Secret would say something like this about plus-size and trans women given what Victoria's Secret started out as. I agree with this because I think it's true that they try to cater to men, even though their brand is made for women—which should be their main focus, not the male gaze.

In this tweet, this user makes a very good point about looking at this issue from a moral point of view. They think it's disappointing that, considering the amount of power and money this company has, they shouldn't have to promote mostly unreasonable body expectations. I definitely agree with this because if Victoria's Secret really wanted to expand their brand, they could use this opportunity to market to lots of other body types and attract even more customers. I think it could be a great advantage for them, but it's sad that they choose not to look at it that way.

In this Facebook post, this user agrees that Victoria's Secret is about creating a fantasy, and that including trans women would ruin that fantasy for men who are significant to Victoria's Secret's brand. I definitely disagree with this because Victoria's Secret's clothing shouldn't be about what the men think of how the women look in it, it should be about appealing to the people who want to buy their lingerie. I've noticed that someone else made a good point in the comments about how someone else's fantasy could include trans women, meaning not everyone has the same taste anyways. Therefore, there should be more variety in the Victoria's Secret fashion show.
