This is not perhaps so much a purpose as an outcome, but, in my opinion, the most important purpose of PE is to have students acknowledge reasoning for being active, and gain the motivation to lead an active lifestyle. PE isn't even mandatory all the way through high school so it's important to get students hooked early on! PE can introduce students to awareness of self and possibilities for active living.

The current state of affairs when it comes to fitness is terrifying. I think most of that comes down to our diets which has been warped over the last 60 years. Modern grains have literally been modified into poisons in the name of capitalism. They are making us fat and sick. We have to exercise more than ever just to get back to the baseline we had in the 1950's. You can go to a triathlon and see people who exercise vigorously with bodies that do not resemble those of athletes. Physical and health education is a way we can fight this problem by educating children before they fall into harmful habits.

I believe that the purpose of PE is to ensure that the students are taught the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle in a fun and interesting way. Not only does physical education contribute towards a healthy lifestyle, but it also provides the students with a chance to develop a stronger self-identity. In doing so, students must also be taught fundamental social and
emotional skills coincidentally, with a focus on encouraging individual responsibility as well as socially acceptable behaviour.

These skills, when executed in a safe and well prepared manner, encourage a positive well being/health both physically AND emotionally. My goal is to help the students understand WHY they are learning the skills so that they can carry this knowledge with them throughout their life. These skills are the foundation for a broader understanding of the concept of respect for ones self and others. In addition, they help build ones self esteem, which is a personal success any one can carry with them in life.

Because students spend the majority of their time in a school or school setting for extended periods of time, what better place than school for students to learn to become physically active? PE is not just about movement skills, but also about how to lead an active and healthy lifestyle and what leadership, fair play and safety are; physical education is so much more than learning different sports or being able to run 6-laps under a certain time limit.

As technology slowly takes over our day to day activities and interactions, there is a loss of opportunity for children to learn face to face social skills. Physical education teaches students to develop a healthy life style for both body and mind through high energy class interactions where restrictions are lifted on space, volume and movement. This allows for a truly authentic opportunity to develop social and emotional learning.
