In Louisiana, there are very low levels that land resides on. Tools like levees, pipes, dikes, and seawalls had to be created in order for the land to be survivable. This modification has also taken place in the Netherlands. Flooding was a serious problem there, so lakes had to be converted and sometimes even drained. Polders were created in effect of that and had to be used to increase food production for the citizens.
The idea of depending on land really has to do with the idea of environmental determinism, which was popular in the last century. An example of this idea would be the climate of a particular area benefiting health conditions, which then affects other items like the death toll. Adaption is evident through changes made by the people. For example, putting solar panels on a house is a form of adaption because humans are shaping their actions and lifestyles around the way the world works. Another form of adaption includes creating new technologies like fans.
Dependence is really the underlying topic under all of this. Of course, without the natural resources we are provided, we would not be able to modify and adapt properly. Sustainability combines economic and environmental aspects as countries have to find ways to use what is available to them in the proper way. At this moment, our population has a limited amount of known natural resources (ex: coal). Those natural resources have to be divided between various nations, and some are not available to certain areas, while others have an abundance. China is one example. The country has 16 of the 20 most polluted cities due to their lack of sustainability, which also causes pollution. The fact that China has a large population may also affect the way things are used.
When talking about population further, the common argument is saving resources for future generations. Some environmentalists say that the future population is doomed in the fact that we are so past sustainability that it is impossible to try and save our natural resources now (i.e., time ran out.) Others, however, argue that natural resources develop over time and that we still have more to discover. This would mean that the future generations have hope.
