All of these adaptations mean that cetaceans may be able to do more complex auditory processing.

However, recent work
showed that sperm whale clans in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans could be computationally distinguished by largely clan-specific “identity codas”, as opposed to “nonidentity codas”made by multiple clans (20). If these identity codas can be used by researchers to tell different clans apart, can they serve a similar function for the whales themselves?"p2

"The fetal baleen whale grows fast in the womb, 2.7 centimeters per day for an unborn blue.11 After birth, the calves suckle on the rich milk of their mothers, 20–50 percent fat, the fast growth continues, so that the calf has added about 60 percent of its mother’s length by its first birthday.12"p70

"The bowhead lives its life extremely slowly, becoming sexually mature at about age twenty-five, with females giving birth every seven years or so; if it avoids the whalers, a bowhead has a good chance of living well past a century.19 It is definitively the end of the slow life-history spectrum."p71

"The other baleen whales don’t form surface active groups when breeding in any obvious way, but this does not mean an absence of sociality. As we will discuss in the next two sections, sounds seem to be an important part of the mating process for baleen whales, and the whales can hear each other over large ranges. The animals may well be interacting in significant ways but be too far apart for humans to consider them part of the same group—or even to see them together. This mismatch between what is likely meaningful for the whales and what we humans can see is a problem for our understanding of all the cetaceans but perhaps especially for the baleen whales, whose sounds are so loud and carry over such long ranges."p74

In the first seven months of 2008, eighteen Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris), four Sowerby's beaked whales (Mesoplodon bidens), five unidentified beaked whales and twenty-nine long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) were reported stranded in the UK and Ireland. Decomposition of those animals investigated puts the predicted time of death at mid-January. Concerns that an unusual mortality event had taken place prompted further investigations. Most carcasses were too decomposed for necropsy. A summary of findings is presented here. Although the initial stranding of five Cuvier's beaked whales in Scotland shared some similarities with atypical mass stranding events linked in time and space to mid-frequency naval sonars, there were two important differences with the remaining strandings during this period. First, the geographical range of the event was very wide and second, the strandings occurred over a prolonged period of several months. Both of these factors could be related to the fact that the mortalities occurred offshore and the carcasses drifted ashore. The cause(s) of this high number of strandings of mixed offshore cetacean species during this period remain undetermined.
