A question that arose for me as I thought about my future classroom is how to incorporate technology in my classroom in such a way that it is useful but also so that it is not too much. I am worried about integrating technology into my teaching without students relying on it and finding that balance.

I want to make sure my students feel respected and valued, with a strong voice. They will be imperative for classroom instruction. In my classroom, I wanted to create an environment where students could focus on our important content with minimal distractions from personal technology. I love the U-shaped class setup for presentations and large class discussions, but I wonder how I can allow for breakout groups and small discussions without spending too much class time rearranging the furniture.

1) I placed students' desks in small groups (with no chairs facing away from the front of the room) so that my class setup allows both large group instruction and small group work.

2) How does the way I set up my classroom facilitate certain behaviors and prevent others? How might I set up my room differently for other activities (like seminars or presentations)?

Is there way to severely limit the function of a computer to only be able to do a particular activity? That way the question of it being a distraction is mostly gone?

I liked our discussion yesterday about technology as a resource and the idea of having an expansive concept of what constitutes technology. I think this is a useful framing for what I want technology to do in my classroom -- it should make things possible, either in terms of accessibility and access for all students and because of the wealth of resources for historical study available online.

I wonder, though, how do you balance technology as a resource with technology as a distraction? How do you balance in school versus out of school access and resources?

I thought about how can I make this space safe and accessible to students. One thing I was intentional about was organizing the classroom in a way that allows for effective transitions from individual to small group to whole class discussions.

1) One question that arose for me as I designed my classroom set up was how I am going to make my classroom feel like a calming environment for my students.

2) I felt pretty confident that I am going to seat my students in groups and that tech will be something we use sometimes, but not all of the time. I still feel uncertain about how to strike the right balance for tech usage, especially for middle school students.

I wanted to be able to have more dimension in my classroom drawing, but I wasn't skilled enough with the software to make that happen within the time we had, more detail too.

A question that arose for me as I thought about my future classroom was how much/what kind of tech I wanted to use in my classroom. I tend to feel that I do not want my classroom to be "cutting edge" tech-wise.

Dear Jack,

A classroom takes time management and understanding of the workflow.

My goal for the classroom was to arrange the floor plan to be inclusive as possible.

Also, I believe a well stocked arts and crafts cart is mandatory to have for students.

I want my future classroom to be engaging, inclusive, and full of colors.

Is class participation more important than turning in homework?

What would the students perspective be on the question above?

Not being silly in the slightest -- is there a way to have good feng shui in a classroom? Are there certain placements of desks that promote focus and others that create anxiety?

Another question: Is there a best position for a screen, i.e. smart board or projector?

Is it okay that I have students NOT sitting in groups for my creative writing/english classroom?

1) Use chemistry software to model chemistry concepts to help students understand and visualize some abstract chemistry concepts and models. Introduce accommodations in labs to make experiments easier for students with certain disabilities.

1) I found that something that was most important to me, my "guiding light", was the idea of student accessability as a means for success. It was important to me to really look through each choice I was making and ask why I was choosing the things I did- why did it matter? Did it actually help any? How am I bettering students?

2)I asked myself a lot about what social studies may look like by the time I have my own classroom- and what might it look like a decade into teaching? The last decade of my life has been historical event after historical event. COVID, the rise of Trumpism/MAGA-ism, the assassination attempt on a US president, etc. How might I address this in a classroom? That is something hard to grapple with.

I wanted to ensure that all students enjoyed an equitable view within the classroom and an open, welcoming environment for all. by placing students in grouped tables around the room, I fear that some students may be forced to face away from the board, which may only encourage lack of attention throughout the class and act as a virtual barrier between themselves and their peers

What I wanted to focus on was making sure my students were properly fed (through refridgerator) just in case they missed breakfast or lunch or other reasons they did not eat. My seating would be tables of 2 spread around the main screen/projector as I would like my class to discuss and watch depictions of history (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, as well as older films that are based on the society it was made in such as The Longest Day, and Triumph of the Will).

1) At the most basic level, I want my classroom able to make learning possible. Students cannot learn if they feel unsafe, unmotivated, or unheard. Therefore, I attempted to design my classroom in a way that promotes feelings of safety, provides long-term motivation, and maintains a space where students feel heard. I tried to do this in a variety of ways. To ensure student safety, we will utilize social contracts and diverse workspaces in the classroom. This creates physical distance between students and provides clear instructions on permissible and impermissible behavior.
