This is no surprise that the U.S. has an obesity problem. One-third of the U.S. population is affected by this condition, thus, the prevalence of obesity continues to be the same. Within our doctors visits, access to beneficial programs, financial support, and political influences the U.S., obesity rates continue prove that our current system is not enough to make a change.

The United States has the biggest fast food industry throughout the globe. It is known for its convenience of food and enormous portion sizes. United States embarrassingly takes pride in the way all food is supersized and makes food into a concept that is not as simple as fueling the body.

Doctor’s visits should always consist of what can be done to improve your health, obese or not. Offering health education to patients is great, however, when its only being done less than half of the time only to obese people, it is no surprise that patients are not fully relayed opportunities they can take to help their health.

Low Income VS Health

There seems to be a common theme between low-income families and increased obesity rates. Low-income families that rely on government assistance (SNAP or supplemental nutrition assistance program) for food are more likely to be prone to childhood obesity. When growing up in a family of low-income as a child and living off far less nutritional foods than what the dietary recommendations are, there is a greater chance for obesity from the start. As children and growing up into adulthood, if there has been a history of obesity, it will be very challenging.

The three main increases include an increase cost per obese individual, increase in population, and an increase in prevalence of obesity. Majority of it is being spent on treatments for the morbidly obese, however, if it was spent on class I obese patients, they could have a chance of not resulting to morbidity.

Beginning with every single doctor’s visit, doctors should pour out any and all resources to everyone about how important it is to have a healthy lifestyle as well as pushing them to take advantage of these resources. Government food aids needs to take a look at what families can actually take home with the aid they are giving them. There should not be families unable to afford the nutritious foods they need to meet daily requirements. On top of these changes, the overall budgeting for the healthcare system in regards to obesity needs to be looked at in more detail.
