Urs:
1. The mother:
The mother is an old lady who is very stubborn. She always sits in a chair, and she doesn´t seem to be able to walk by herself. It is clear that the mother has no intentions to leave the old village even though their last goat has died, and there is nothing to grow or eat in the little town.
2. The adult son:
The son is a grown up man, who never left his mother. He does whatever he can to provide and care for her. Even though he doesn´t want to leave her, he still dreams of starting a new life in another place where the sun is shining and they can live happily. Therefore, he makes the choice to carry his mother on his back and search for another place to live in.

Symbolism

Bao:
The little bao bun in the movie is a symbol of the mothers son, and how it feels to 'lose' a child when they grow up and becomes a person of their own - one who does not need his/ her mother. The mother uses the little bao as a replacement of her son, to fulfill her heart with what she lost, when her son moved away from home.

Urs:
The mother brings two things when they leave the village. Her pillow, and a brick from the house.
The pillow: Could be a symbol of her will to live. She drops the pillow a few times because she wants to get back to their old village. Near the ending of the short film, when they hang on the mountainside, she drops her pillow for the last time, and she dies.
The brick: Might be a little sign from the mother, that she wishes him good luck in the future.

Similarities (Bao and Urs)

The two movies are similiar because they both deal with the theme of loosing someone you love. In Bao the mother looses her son, because he grows older and leaves home. In Urs the son looses his mother when he tries to move their life to a better place.

Another similarity in the two movies is the theme "family and culture" when it comes to actually being present and living in the moment.

Perspective (Look up)

Both 'Bao' and 'Urs' evolve around the theme and the culture of being with people in real life and spending your time with the people you love.
In contrast to the short film 'Look up' which revolves around the detachment from your family by living your life online.
Bao is about a mother who is unable to let go of her son. Urs is about a son who is unable to let go of his mother. This is a contrast to the short film 'Look up' which is about how you reduce the intimacy completely, when you are unable to let go of the online world and only live your life through your phone or your computer.

Bao:

The mother: the mother is very sad and paranoid throughout the story. She is sad because she has to deal with the natural loss of her child and the story therefore revolves around her development, and how she in the end learns that her son is not leaving her, he is only moving on to become an adult and live his own life. She is very paranoid trying to protect the little Bao. She sees the little Bao as a symbol and a replacement of her son and tries to protect him because she does not want him to grow up and leave her like her son did.

Little Bao: the little Bao is a replacement of the real son. The little Bao shows emotion like a normal son would do. The little Bao grows up like a normal child and in the end he want to leave the mother just like her real son did. The little Bao is just a creation of the mothers emagination.
