Little is known about Gabon before European contact. The coast was originally a center of slave trade with the Dutch, English, and French, but later, in 1839, France established a protectorate over Gabon. In 1910 Gabon became part of French Equatorial Africa, and in 1960, Gabon became independent. Much of its culture is influenced by the French.
