On distingue trois grands types de flux migratoires :
  • Les principaux flux s’effectuent essentiellement du Sud vers le Nord. 
  • Des flux migratoires subsistent entre les pays du sud : les populations des pays pauvres ou en guerre migrent ainsi vers les pays en développement (Golfe Persique).
  • Il existe aussi des flux migratoires entre les pays du nord 
Les contrastes de développement économique sont l’un des premiers facteurs de migration. Les migrants quittent leur pays d’origine pour fuir la misère ou la guerre, pour travailler, étudier ou se faire soigner.
Les migrations forcées résultant des guerres, de l’insécurité, des famines provoquent le départ de nombreux réfugiés.
Les migrations ne concernent pas uniquement les personnes pauvres, mais aussi les populations qualifiées : c’est le brain drain. A cela s’ajoutent les réfugiés climatiques ainsi que les étudiants participant à des programmes d’échanges (Erasmus).

Ils essayent de passer la mer, mais c’est souvent dramatique. Les passeurs profitent de la détresse des gens pour leur prendre beaucoup d’argent et les faire passer dans des bateaux de fortune. Il y a des milliers de morts noyés.

Des organisations humanitaires tentent de les sauver en mer.

  • Pour des raisons économiques : il n’y a pas de travail dans son pays d’origine et on cherche une vie meilleure dans un pays plus riche.

  • Les crises politiques : les réfugiés fuient les guerres comme par exemple en Syrie ou les privations de libertés comme par exemple en Afghanistan.

  • Les phénomènes liés au changement climatique (sécheresse, catastrophes naturelles) provoquent des migrations environnementales.

Mais il existe aussi des flux migratoires Sud- Sud, entre des pays en voie de développement. Enfin, il y a également des flux migratoires Nord- Nord, entre les pays développés.(Ces migrations sont souvent le fait de personnes qualifiées, c’est-à-dire des gens qui ont fait des études. (Brain Drain - la fuite des cerveaux)).

Dans les pays du Nord, les migrants fournissent une main d’œuvre peu qualifiée, et lutte contre le vieillissement de la population par exemple.

Ceux-ci enrichissent culturellement les pays d’accueil mais sont parfois confrontés à des difficultés d’intégration et au racisme.

Dans les pays du sud, la fuite des cerveaux prive les pays de la compétence de personnels  qualifiés même si les migrants peuvent participer au développement de leur pays grâce à l’argent qu’ils envoient.
