PM Dawn - Set Adrift on Memory Bliss

This was probably the most notable song to have been sampled from Spandau Ballet’s True. It has taken on the instrumentals from Spandau Ballet’s True such as the “keyboard hook and vocals from the chorus,” – (Wikipedia). The tempo seems to have been sped up a bit and there are a few parts that have been edited out. They have sort of “cleaned it up” a bit to fit their own style and vocals. It was a number one hit and 1991 and is one of my favorite songs even today. In my opinion, they did a phenomenal job with the sampling and it went perfectly well with the vocals. It really made the song.

This song contains the original instrumentals to the song by PM Dawn, Set Adrift on Memory Bliss. The tempo seems to be a little slower compared to that of PM Dawn’s version of the instrumentals. There are also some pauses accompanied by a breakdown or even simply a presence with other various instruments such as a saxophone, piano, drums and guitar in the beat during certain sections of the song, while PM Dawn’s version of the instrumentals is continuous. I don’t think it’s hard to see why other artists would like to sample this song. The instrumentals are brilliant.

Remix Culture

I think that remix culture is significant for the sampling, creativity and enjoyment of music. Unfortunately, that kind of creativity can easily be hindered by copyright law. From my understanding in the film, Rip! A Remix Manifesto, it is up to the artist or the company who holds the rights to the particular song. It depends on “how upset they are,” essentially. That determines if and to what extent that they would pursue a lawsuit. I do think however, that permissions should be obtained because of the legalities and to protect oneself. On the other hand, I believe that the amount of control from those legalities should be limited. Artists have started to coming up with ways to accommodate this remix culture by, “encouraging fans to make their own remixes by making the components of their music available online as a bundle of tracks, with each track isolating a single instrument or group of instruments,” (Wissner).

One of the major points in the film was that, “culture always builds on the past.” Without the invention of these musical elements, the artists would have nothing to build on and if those elements didn’t exist, then music would not be able to change or evolve. Brett Gaylor likened the music to art basically saying that it is similar to trying to paint without the tools invented for it. Bringing old songs to life or freshness to it for newer generations to come to appreciate them is something to be enjoyed and celebrated. There are countless songs that I may have heard that didn’t quite catch my attention until another artist came along and breathed new life into it through making a cover. They changed or modified the presentation of the song. In a way, it’s a complement to have some of your work used by other artists. In order to have the desire to use it, they must have valued and admired it, though the origins should not be forgotten.

You’re able to listen to multiple songs in the same timeframe that you would only be able to hear a single one and are able to hear the songs in a different way. I like how they’re deconstructed and made into something almost entirely new or different or play the highlights of the song rather than in its entirety. It’s an alternative way of keeping the audience’s attention by making more interesting or slowly introducing intro of next song into the ending of the current song, creating a smoother transition.

Mr. Probz ft. Chris Brown & T.I. - Waves (Robin Schulz Remix)

There are three versions of this song that I know of but here, I have included the very last. To name them off, first, there is the original Waves by Mr. Probz and then there is Waves (Robin Schulz Remix) by Mr. Probz and lastly, Waves feat. Chris Brown & T.I. (Robin Schulz Remix). The original version is Mr. Probz doing the vocals alone with a much slower tempo. The Robin Schulz Remix features a much faster, upbeat tempo and vocals with a significant studio audio art instrumental addition at the beginning right before the vocals start. This further illustrates the degree to which remix culture is beneficial to the art of music.
