Power can be strong but only for those who know how to use it. This is seen in the Tempest when Ariel reports, "fever of the mad, and played/ some tricks of desperation . . . Not a hair perished./On their sustaining garments not a blemish" (Shakespeare 1.2.247-248, 258-259). What this means is that Ariel has all the power to not be a slave but chooses to obey prosperro like how he chose to not obey Sycorax

It can be hard to properly use power effectively without the correct knowledge. This can be seen when Prosperro states in a story "Knowing I loved my books" (Shakespeare 1.2.198). This means that because he loved his books and books gave him knowledge, Prospero was able to use power to control Ariel and Caliban properly.

People's beliefs in power change when tricked. This is seen when stephano says, "Drink, servant monster, when I bid thee" (Shakespeare 3.2.9). In this scene Stephano and Trinculo have tricked Caliban into thinking they are gods by getting him drunk.
