Japanese American Internment Camps On A Map

In this map you can see that the majority of this was focused in the West. There were only two camps that were farther east, but nothing reached the east coast. A big reason for this was that all of the camps were centered in very rural areas. The government wanted Japanese Americans separated from the rest of society, so that is why they are in very empty places.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 the US government was scared that Japanese Americans were not loyal. They forcibly removed about 110,00 Japanese American from their homes to put them into internment camps that were mostly west. These camps were in very rural areas to truly separate these Japanese Americans from society. Executive Order 9066 was the order that was passed by the government for them to continue with the camps. In these camps Japanese Americans made schools, churches, and truly just made the best they could. They had little to no privacy. The barracks were small spaces for entire families. They were also fed very poor quality food, and it was easy for disease to spread especially to women and children. Japanese Americans were released at the end of World War II. It wasn't till about thirty four years later when the government executed Executive Order 9066.
