         <description><![CDATA[<div><em>- </em>On average students learn 1,000 words/year at school (thus suggesting ELL students could be 1,000 words behind in their first year).<br>- Introducing <strong>high-frequency word</strong>s is critical but also <strong>low-frequency words</strong> should be reviewed <em>(ex., General academic words, subject-specific words, highly specialized vocabulary)<br>- </em>For both ELL and English speakers, receptive knowledge is usually stronger than productive knowledge <em>(how to use the word effectively).<br></em>- Some ELL learners will not have encountered prefixes or suffixes in their native language, thus explicitly teaching these concepts is very important.</div>]]></description>
