However, it is not the only data that is helpful. I love that data carousel pushes teachers towards collaboration. However, I think that looking beyond assessment scores and getting into a dialogue not just with teachers, but with students, is essential for student success. There are a variety of studies that show the direct correlation between school attendance and school achievement. This, to me, was the most important take away from the chapter. We, as educators, must be doing everything in our power to make sure that students are in the chairs in our classrooms. Data has really evolved for me as I have moved through this course from something that seemed irrelevant to something that cannot be ignored if you actually want improvement in your building and classroom. One of the biggest questions for me, once I saw the value in data, was which type of data is most valuable - qualitative or quantitative? My finding was that both kinds of data are invaluable to a school improvement plan. Without all of these pieces, there is less of a chance for improvement. The plan for improvement must be well thought out, taking into consideration information from previous years and from other schools in similar situations. The goals must be realistic and attainable if the school is genuinely looking for improvement. Each person involved, administration, teachers, support staff, students, and parents, must be working together and giving their full effort to make sure improvements take place.
