Decoding word problems to determine the objective and finding the solution. Creating meaningful charts, graphs, etc. that show the meaning of information. Building on previous knowledge to achieve the next conceptual milestone. Communicating and collaborating effectively in groups.

Literacy in mathematics is understanding two languages as they are written together. You must take words and symbols and combine them to make sense of problems to solve. Literacy goes further as students are asked to make sense of problems to create equations of their own. Literacy is understanding and interacting with text and symbols in order to further your understanding and produce new knowledge.
