The Civil Rights Movement took place from the late 1950s to the late 1960s. Black Americans were fighting for desegregation and an end to discrimination during the Civil Rights Movement. In the 50s and 60s, buildings and facilities such as schools, bathrooms, and water fountains were all being segregated based on skin color. This was not only unfair, but completely unjust. During this time period, African Americans fought peacefully and diligently for civil rights. They did this through several forms of civil disobedience, such as: peaceful protests, marches, and boycotts. Some protests African Americans took part in were sit-ins and peaceful integrations. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a boycott that took place after Rosa Parks was jailed for sitting in the white section on a bus. Following this event, blacks everywhere went to any measure possible to avoid using the bus system until it was integrated. Images from the time show the immense amounts of violence the protesters faced, despite their work being peaceful and civil. A widely distinguished photo taken by Bill Hudson is a prime example of the discrimination taking place against the protesters. The photo showed an African American man being attacked by a vicious police dog for him simply protesting. Many other moments captured on camera also provide perfect evidence for the injustice taking place against the civil rights activists. Some influential civil rights leaders during the movement were Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa parks. Both of these figures instilled feelings of hope and drove more and more African Americans to protest and challenge the decisions of the US government. The resilience of the black Americans protesting for their rights continued to motivate and push them forward, leading to the passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. The actions of these people not only led to the Civil Rights Act, but also initiated the fight for rights for all different people too. ("Civil rights movement.")

Lily Owens has always lived in question of her late mother’s past. Her hostile father, T. Ray, never talks about her and Lily is too afraid to ask. However, when Lily’s carekeeper is jailed, Lily knows she has to help Rosaleen escape. The duo flees to Tiburon, South Carolina, a desolate town that was scribbled on Lily’s mom’s Black madonna picture. When the two are able to locate the origins of the odd picture of the Black Madonna to a unique, pink house, Lily has a feeling she has found the right place. Here, in the pink house, she learns the ways of the beekeeping Boatwrights and develops a newly found love for the bees and outdoors. When one of the sisters, May, passes away soon after Lily’s arrival, it changes the heart and mindset of everyone in the pink house. This change after May’s death encourages Lily to approach August, the oldest sister, about her mother’s past. Lily learns that she not only was the cause of her mom’s death, but learns that her mom left her and
T. Ray months before the fatal accident. The new information from August confused and unsettled Lily, but finally gave her a form of closure about her mom’s death. In the end of the story, T. Ray is able to track Lily down in Tiburon. It becomes Lily’s goal to convince him to let her stay with the sisters, who feel like her new family. Lily succeeds in persuading T. Ray, and begins a new life with the sisters, Rosaleen, and the bees.

The Civil Rights Movement has revealed America’s coming of age because it marked a turning point in the amount of work and determination the people of our country would have to exert to make a change. The Civil Rights Movement proved to America that the challenges we face that are worth fighting for are not easy to face, but can be overcome with persistence and resilience. The African Americans taking part in the Civil Rights Movement continued to move forward with their cause, regardless of the fact that most others were turned against them. This has strengthened the will of the people of our country and has also given them confidence and strength in future conflicts.
