Gender bias has been implanted in our heads since childhood. We have been taught that blue is the colour for boys and pink is for the girls. The boys are given strong, muscular action figures while the girls play with dolls, kitchen sets and make up. Thinking of a female construction worker and a stay-at-home dad seems like an extremely odd concept to you. As we grow so do these ideas and we face them as challenges in our work space, sports and public transport.

Besides workplace , public transportation also one of the gender bias in social settings . Normally , people think that logistic drivers are mostly male and female cannot handle this kind of job . For instance , there are 71% of female who have a full driving licence compare to male . Literally people assume that female drivers lack of driving skills and it might be dangerous to themselves and other people , but according to The New York Times , women are safer drivers despite men . In India , a taxi-service for women called "ForShe" is one of public transport system which exclusively employs women taxi drivers and this shows women are capable to do tough jobs too . Not only driving skills , the female taxi drivers also are required to learn martial arts for safety and how to repair cars just in case if their cars are not functioning . Thus , gender bias in public transportation is more likely to focus on women capabilities in driving skills and job opportunity as drivers .

It is an epidemic which we must continuously fight against if we ever dream of progressing towards a community with first class mindsets. Everyone should be respected and given equal opportunities.

Gender inequality has always been a controversial topic since the existence of mankind.Even the founder of the modern Olympics Baron Dierre de Corhetin, said in 1986 “No matter how toughened a sportswomen may be, her organism is not out to sustain certain shock. “It is obvious, that women are being paid less than men in sports. This due to lack of interest in women’s sports. People think women can’t give good performance compared to men, hence they did not find it entertaining enough. For example Maria Sharapova is being paid less than Roger Federer by $40 million difference for the game of tennis. Therefore, it is evident that women’s in this society being diminished.

First and foremost, the most common environment for gender inequality occurs at the workplace. The female gender are the ones who usually gets oppressed by the males in the workplace environment. This can be seen through the differences in salary. According to a website named "Payscale", female earns 24 cents less for every dollar earn by male. Statistic shows that employers employs more toward male gender than female, because the female gender tends to have more absent leaves due to child birth and other needs. Lastly, the female gender are generally harassed more than the male gender, since the workplace has higher amount of males superior abusing their power. End of the line, the workplace is a dominant place for gender inequality.

[ SCENE 1 ]

Margaret : " Suan Choo , guess what I saw when I came back from work today , or rather , what I smelt . There was a foul smell coming from the kitchen . I rushed to see and there was an eathenpot of the Dowager's herbal medicine brewing as usual . The stuff had boiled over and was trickling down the sides my poor cooker . Luckily I came back in time . Otherwise , that wretched thing would have ruined my whole kitchen . This is the third time this week , Choo . The Dowager left her chinese medicine brewing while she goes off I dont know where . Later she came back and had the audacity to ask who had turned off the flame when her medicine wasn't yet properly brewed !"

(Light cigarette with one hand while holding a phone with the other)

Suan Choo :(sigh) "Every family has upleasant stories .Sometimes my mother-in-law will visit us just to make sure her son has enough food amd clean the laundry and she kept on going to temple to ask a baby from the God ! "

Margaret : "Would you believe it , the Dowager actually invited a temple medium to my house ?"(cry shortly)

Margaret : " She wants to communicate with her dead husband in my house ! Imagine my fury . she is driving me crazy ! and Dr.Lee told me I have to relax if I want to have a baby . My God ! "

Suan Choo : " Why cant these old people leave their dead alone ? Why must they cause trouble to others by delving into these dark , sinister things which as best left alone ? Anyway , do you believe with these supernatural events ?"

Margaret : " Anyway , I only believe that those people my mother-in-law associated with are a bunch of cheats , that's all."

[Scene 2]

Margaret : " Mum , I am having a baby now , and it's already the third month ! "

(smiling happily while touching stomach )

Mother-in-law : "Well, it's good for you . You've waited six years for a child since you married , and now you're finally going to have one ."

(Recall the mother-in-law's reaction when Mee Lian was pregnant)

[Scene 3 ]

Mum : " You shouldn't quarrel with your mother-in-law , young people must heed the old . They must not raise their voice against the old . It is not good , Margaret ."

Margaret : " Mum , i agree with you . I agree when the old are reasonable and considerate in their behaviour . But when they are unreasonable and hypocrotical and spiteful , when they are never satisfied no matter how much you do for them and criticise you behind your back , then they don't deserve the respect of the young ! "

Mum : " Margaret , it is not good to talk like this , it is not good at all . I respected my mother-in-law because of her grey hairs though she was cruel to me . The young must respect the old , Margaret . or they will be punished . Those guilty of filial impiety would be strucked by the Lightning God . The Lightning God in heaven heeds the cries of the old."

Margaret : " What a nonsense ! Mum , this is the new age . This is not the old age , when you were scared of your mother-in-law and allowed her to trample on you . There is no Lightning God today , Mum - no Lightning God or Thunder God or Kitchen God . They all died long ago "

[Scene 4 ]

(Mother-in-law is complaining to her neighbour )

Margaret : Oh , I can't stand this ! I can't stand this anymore !"

[Raining heavily]

Margaret : "Mum , why you complained to Aunt Lucy of you being ill-treated ? Rice porridge with nothing but soy sauce ? Did I really starve you like this before ? Huh ! "

Mother-in-law : " So you dare speak this way to your old mother-in-law ? You see the grey hairs on my head , and you dare speak to me in this way ?You , who are going to be a mother ! You take care !

Margaret : " Im not afraid of you ! I've had enough trouble from you , and so you get out of my house ! "

Mother-in-law : " You wouldn't dare do this to me if my son were here ."

Margaret : " This is my house , it was bought in my name . And I tell you to get out ! "

Mother-in-law : " All right , listen then , daughter-in-law . In this house you have treated me like dirt , you have made me feel worse than a prisoner . So I leave now , but before I go , let me tell you this . Those who are cruel to their elders will never prosper ! They are cursed . I curse you now ; you are bearing a child but i curse you ! "

[ Eng Kiat comes back and soothed Margaret ]

Eng Kiat (monologue) : These women-they give endless trouble .

[Scene 5 ]

(Margaret is not feeling well and having nightmares )

Eng Kiat : " You had a bad experience and are now imagining all sorts of things . I'll take you to see Dr Lee tomorrow morning , You'll see that everything is all right ."

[Next morning ]

Dr.Lee : "She's under some obsession which is driving her to distraction ; it will be bad for the baby . I recommend her a psychiatric treatment."

Mum : " Margaret , I consulted a temple medium , and he told me a way in which the curse be lifted and your peace mind will be restored , do you want to try ? "

Margaret : " Yes , mum yes . I would do anything to save my baby , please ! "

[ Scene 6 ]

(showing the way to release the curse )

Margaret and Eng Kiat ( sobbed) : Mother , please .. Please help us ! "

Mother-in-law : (Cried out and write impatiently) All right ! Give me the paper to write and be gone ! Leave me in peace ! "

Mother-in-law : (cried imperiously) " Now go , all of you ! It will be all over in a few minutes, you’ll see,”

Senior officer: “Good afternoon, sir,”& I am sorry to have kept you waiting but we have had your carpets looked at by our expert and he feels sure a mistake must have been made.

Margaret: “A mistake?”

Senior officer: “Yes, madam. The bills you presented don’t make any sense

Christopher: “What kind of mistake?”

Senior officer: “Well, you have come forward and declared two carpets, one at a price of ten thousand pounds and one at a price of five hundred pounds, according to these receipts.” “Yes?” “Every year hundreds of people return to England with Turkish carpets, so we have some experience in these matters. Our adviser feels certain that the bills have been incorrectly made out.”

Christopher : “I don’t begin to understand

Senior officer: “the large carpet, we are assured, has been spun with a crude distaff and has only two hundred ghiordes or knots, per square inch. Despite its size we estimate it to be valued around five thousand pounds. The small carpet, on the other hand, we estimate to have nine hundred knots per square inch and is a fine example of a silk hand-woven traditional Hereke and undoubtedly would have been a bargain at five thousand pounds. As both carpets come from the same shop, we assume it must be a clerical error.

Christopher: “As you’re allowed five hundred pounds before paying any duty, the excise will still be two thousand pounds.” Christopher quickly handed over the Kendall-Humes’ wad of notes. The senior officer counted them while his junior carefully re-wrapped the two carpets.

Christopher: “Thank you,”

Mr. Kendell-Humes’: “You were in there a long time,” Any problems?” “No, they were just assessing the value of the carpets.” “Any extra charge?”

Christopher: “No, your two thousand pounds covered everything,”

Mr. Kendell-Humes’ :“Then we got away with it, old fellow. Well done. One hell of a bargain to add to my collection.”

Margaret: “Why didn’t you tell Mr Kendall-Hume the real value of his carpet?”

Christopher: “I did give it some considerable thought but I came to the conclusion that the troth was the last thing Kendall-Hume wanted to be told.” “But don’t you feel any guilt? After all, we’ve stolen.” “Not at all, my dear. We haven’t stolen anything. But we did get one hell of a ‘steal’.
