The trial was between the Book of Darwin, and the Book of Genesis. He was brought to court under the charges of breaking the law of teaching of evolution in public schools. It was prohibited to teach in public schools anything that went against the teaching that people originated from a higher being.

February of 1919, the Seattle General Strike took over Washington's labor communities. After the war, people wanted their money that they lost from wages because the government had to supply for the war. The workers wanted higher wages that weren't supplied during World War 1. People in manufacturing companies were unhappy, so they participated in a labor strike that lasted almost a week, and ended in a success for the workers who were on strike.

Two other strikes during the 1920's were the the 1920 Alabama Coal Strike and the Timber Workers Strike in 1929.
