When Brian's parents, Rex and Rose Mary left for a quick trip leaving the kids in Welch with Erma, a incident occurred when Jeannette came into Erma's room seeing Erma kneeling before Brian, grabbing him in the crotch, Jeanette yelled at Erma saying "Erma, you leave him alone" (p. 146). Significance:The significance of this event, was to show how Erma had treated Brian and to give a little insight into what kind of person Erma is and what her past could've been like. Not much is known why Erma did this, but the event shows how Erma could've possibly done the same thing to Rex. Reflection: Jeannette added this event to the book because of how important it is to know that living with Erma was no better then any of their other homes and that even brain has to endure some pretty bad thing like this. Another reason why she would've put this in the book was to maybe show how Erma is just simply a sick person who had a troubled past just like them and that this is probably the only way she knew how to show affection for a child.

Jeannette and her family have to leave Arizona in a hurry which Rex calls the skedaddle: "Dad!" I said. "I forgot TinkerBell!" (Walls 17).  Significance: This quote is significant because it is telling a small detail of how each family member has to give up items during hard times.  Reflection: I believe Jeannette mentioned this quote because she want's the readers to know how big of a hurry the family was in when they had to do the skedaddle, which was used when they didn't pay bills or ran from the law enforcement.

Rex also happened to take Brain to The Green Lantern, the local brothel of Battle Mountain. During the visit, Rex leaves Brain in a hotel living room, while Rex takes a woman of the nickname Ginger into the bedroom. After a little while when Rex and Ginger are done dealing with "adult matters" they come out of the room and Rex told Brain to give her the comic book. "It was mine!" Brian said. "And she kept asking me to read the bigger words. She's a grown up, and she can't even read a comic book." (p.79). Significance:  The significance of this event is to show how Rex, is willing to give up his children's things even for a little hook-up with a prostitute. It also shows that Rex had a affair with his wife and most likely did it more than once, and that its the first time that Brain and Jeannette learn was happens in the Green Lantern. Reflection: 
Jeanette most likely put this even into her book to show maybe one of Brains first big losses, such as losing the comic book to Ginger. 
another reason why she could've put this into the book was to show how Rex doesn't have much loyalty in his marriage as his wife does. Rex is willing to have a affair with a prostitute and to do whatever he wants not thinking about his wife or how hurt she would be to find out what he has been doing behind her back, while for Rose Mary who is extremely loyal to her husband and refused to leave him even though he treats her horribly.

Rex is letting Jeannette know he isn't afraid to have rules in his household even though they let the kids do what they want. Reflection: I think Rex is doing the right thing because he is trying to teach his kids respect for them and other adults.

The family doesn't even have enough money to repair there house in Welch, for their own safety.  The worst part of having the house on the side of the hill is they need to keep it up kept or it may slide down the hill on its own.  Reflection: The Walls parents need to fix the house in Welch so they can have a safe place to live and don't have to work around every single problem.

Not long after Rex ask if Jeannette could loan him some money, and she did, this was constant and soon Rex owed Jeannette 80 dollars. In order to pay his daughter back Rex devised a plan so that he can scam a man named Robbie in pool, Rex never told Jeannette the plan. Soon after Rex took Jeannette to a bar and scammed Robbie out of his money. After the pool game Robbie was mad and got drunk then asked Jeannette if she wanted to go to his hotel room, than yelled out to Rex "I'm going to take your girl upstairs". "Sure" dad said "Just don't do anything i wouldn't do"(p. 212). Significance: The significance of this event is that it shows that Rex is willing to let a stranger take his daughter upstairs just to earn 80 bucks that he owes her. Rex is a father who believes that his kids can defend for themselves but lacks the thought that Robbie is a grown man and Jeannette isn't even 13 yet, so if Jeannette wasn't able to freak out Robbie with her scar then he could've raped her. Reflection: Jeannette put this into the book to show how low her father is when it comes to protecting his kids. Besides the fact that Jeannette is in charge of the house instead of him is bad enough but for him to take money from his daughter and send her upstairs with a stranger who has bad intentions is really a horrible thing a father can do.

One girl named Dinitia Hewitt, took a complete interest in Jeannette and soon confronted her on the playground. "You think you better than us?" the tall girl asked. "no," I said. "I think we're all equal"(P. 139). Significance: The significance of this event is because on Jeannette first in the school she was told that she was slow and that she got beat up by Dinitia and her little gang, and to make things worst when they notice she was poor, Jeannette only got beat up more. Reflection: Jeannette put this event in the book to show how bad her first day was and that even after that things got worst till they could get better. Another reason she put this event in, was to put in what happened after it, how Jeannette over came her bullies and teachers and even befriended Dinitia.

Billy Deel the new kid in town, also the kid who has been acting really weird with Jeannette went in the tool shed after Jeannette did. When Billy got into the shed with Jeannette he started asking a bunch of questions to her like does her know what the people do in the green lantern? has she kissed anybody before?. After he asked if she ever kissed anybody before she started kissing her and tugging on her shorts, trying to perform sexual relations with Jeannette, when Jeanette wouldn't go with him, he started forcing her. When Jeanette got out of the tool shed Billy started shouting "I kissed Jeannette" (P. 86). Significance: The significance of this event is to show how at the young age of 8 Jeannette was almost raped by Billy, and that Billy was clearly a troubled kid. Besides knowing that Billy was a JD this is his first act towards Jeannette that showed how bad of a kid he really is. Reflection: Jeannette put his event in the book to show how, when she was just a little girl she had to face creeping rapist like people. Even though Billy was the same age as her, he knew what he was trying to do, that shows that a lot of kids back then could've really had a hard life and that Billy was just one of the first people to try to harm Jeannette in a sexual way.

They accomplished digging the hole, but it didn't turn out to be what they wanted it to be: "But since we couldn't afford to pay the town's trash-collection fee, our garbage was really piling up.  One day Dad told us to dump it in the hole" (Walls 155).  Significance: This quote is showing how the family cannot even afford to pay a fee for the town to come pick up their garbage.  Reflection:  I believe the Walls family should either burn the garbage or dig a different hole and cover it up.
