Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or character with a historical account of the same period.

● Contrast: To recognize and discuss the differences of a topic.

● Theme: A theme is the central, unifying (and often universal) idea about

the human experience that emerges through a text.

● Characters: A character is a person, animal, plant, or inanimate object

that moves the plot forward.

● Setting: The setting is the place, time, date, era (or time) in history that a text takes place.

● Develop: the way an author introduces, expands, and strengthens a theme or idea across the story.

● Fiction: Writing that tells a story made up by the author. It may be inspired by real life, but the characters, events, and settings are imagined rather than factual.

● Portrayal: The way someone or something is shown, described, or represented in a text, film, or other medium. It’s about how the author, speaker, or creator chooses to present a character, idea, or event.

● Time Period: Literary time periods refer to the general period in history in which a text is created. These time periods and their associated cultural, social, scientific, and political events form the basis of movements.

● Historical Context: The context of a text’s creation is the situation formed by the mixture of the historical, political, religious, cultural, and/or social events that establish a climate against which a text can be analyzed as a product of its time.
