MY PERCEPTION ABOUT EVALUATIVE THEORIES

On one hand I want to speak about a general topic that covers all my initial concerns about evaluation. At the very beginning of the course I was convinced about the prevalence of the qualitative evaluation over the quantitative. However, the authors we have read have taught me the importance of the quantitative part as well. Today I consider that this is not a problem of black or white. On the contrary, I think both parts should form a complete and valid recourse to evaluate students' progress.

Moreover, I do think that the educative system makes a lot of mistakes when creating some of the evaluation normative for schools and public institutions. One of the lectures that we did in class said: "It was Cooper (1968) who pointed out the need to include social context, and with the development of communicative language teaching and lip service at least to ethnography of speaking". And I think that in Colombia the most important tests in terms of social relevance, they are not neither contextualized nor fair. In this way, I think that as teachers we must press the different governments to change that kind of regulation that affects students' learning process and progress.

AGREE? DISAGREE?

At the end of the course, I feel we have not touched many polemic subjects, and in this way I mostly agree with theorists and ideas seen during the class. We have spoken about the need of contextualizing evaluation, about the new perspectives of the language from a communicative and sociocultural position, about the principles of language assessment, and those are discussions that have been already solved because now the academy recognizes their importance for the language teaching field. Nonetheless, I feel identified with some objections that my teacher and my classmates have done during the classes. For example, I consider that in our context it would be difficult to apply all the principles of language assessment that are proposed by the authors.

This is my conclusion. I firmly believe that evaluating is one of the most important aspects when teaching... because of its social relevance.
