This is a group designed to help current and former foster children who are now juniors and seniors in high school to navigate the transition to postsecondary life.

Topics will include foster care paperwork, retrieving high school transcripts, applying for college or trade school, ways to stay organized during your first year out of high school, and the characteristics of healthy relationships and how to build strong connections with the right people, especially helpful adults.

Since this population’s numbers will vary and fluctuate at the campus, this can be run as a small group of 5-10 students at a time.

Further participation will be based on participation within the group and abiding by the ground rules and expectations.

We will open each session with a discussion on the ground rules and expectations. During Stage 1, I hope to put any nerves at ease by ensuring a safe place to discuss things. There will be a few ice breakers and students are free to share about their shared experiences of foster care. The hope is that these shared experiences help create connections that last throughout their high school career and beyond.

As we progress to Stage 2 and discuss items more in-depth, I would like to include some activities that require the students to problem solve together and give each other feedback - especially during relationship discussions but also during the discussions about future plans.

The last of the six sessions I have planned ties together perfectly with Stage 3 because it readdresses relationships and we will discuss a follow-up plan so we can reconnect in the future. All members will agree together to keep confidentiality and we will discuss plans for them to stay in contact - even if that means having the exchange contact information while we are together.

(Missouri Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program, 2015, pg. 7)

During sessions when we discuss foster care paperwork and programs, I will be informing them with little participation. When we discuss relationships, I plan to be more participative in the conversations.

(Cherry, 2023)
