This is French philosopher, cultural and semiotics theorist Roland Barthes’ last book.

It’s a mediation on the relationship between photography, history and death, written shortly after the loss of his mother. It’s raw and moving, but all compelling in discussing what is special about photography and why we keep coming back to the same image time and time again.

Short of time?

Read the passage that starts; ‘Now, one November evening, shortly after my mother’s death’ (pp.63-72 in my edition) There is a host of secondary readings of this passage from other academics if it interests you. Question: Do you need to see this image or do you have your own that has the same significance?

Theorist and writer Michel de Certeau, examines the city by analysing aspects of daily urban life.

He argues that walking in the city has its own logic and rhetoric and that the walker imposes their own language on the built structures imposed by urban planners.

This subversive and ‘poetic’ language is a reply to existing power structures. Walkers form ‘resistant practices that elude discipline’. For example, ‘desire paths’’. As 3D designers/ architects, it’s an excellent reminder to consider the human factor.

See full book here: https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/rave/detail.action?docID=922939&query=The%20Practice%20of%20Everyday%20Life

bell hooks is a feminist writer and cultural theorist; she writes brilliantly about cinema and her experience as a Black female spectator. ‘Looking’ is always political in Hook’s life. That traumatic relationship has informed both parenting and viewing and led to the ‘oppositional gaze’ – a form of courageous looking that provides Black agency. However, Hooks notes dominant power structures are internalised and well as external.

As a Black spectator – she discusses experiencing ‘moments of rupture’, resisting the film’s discourse. This is especially profound for the Black female viewer who is absent or there to ‘serve’ white womanhood as object of the phallocentric gaze.

Short on time?

Read chapter 7 on ‘The Oppositional Gaze: Black Female Spectators (pp.115-131)

My summary:

Bowie's ideation and creation of the character known as "Ziggy Stardust" developed from the idea that intelligent lifeforms live in outer space, on other planets and stars. This, as well as the idea that stars and planets themselves could be depicted in a recognisably humanoid form. Ziggy represented all that was not tied to Earth's laws, however was also critical of the Earth he had landed on. Social commentary from a being separate to the world we inhabit.

Design Tells a Story: Just like a book or a movie, design communicates a message. Whether it's a logo, a poster, or a website, every design choice tells a story to the people who see it.

Design Makes You Feel: Good design evokes emotions. It can make you happy, excited, or curious. Designers try to make you feel a certain way by how they arrange things.

Design Guides Your Experience: When you look at something, the design leads you through it, much like a story guides you through its plot. Designers want to make sure you have a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Design Speaks its Own Language: Design has its own special way of talking. Things like colors, fonts, and how things are arranged all say something. Designers use these tools to tell their story visually.

Design is Shaped by Culture: Design is influenced by where it comes from and who's going to see it. Different cultures like different things, so designers need to consider that when telling their story.

Design Solves Problems: At its core, design is about fixing things. Designers use storytelling to explain their solutions in a way that makes sense and looks good.
