Ausgehend von aktuellen Kommunikationsprozessen über soziale Ungleichheiten geht es in dieser FG darum, wie entsprechende Ursachen, Wirkmechanismen und Auswirkungen intersektionell diskutiert werden. Wer kann diese Kommunikationsprozesse wie gestalten; und warum? Und welche Rolle spielen dabei Privilegien? Welche Formate, Medien und Räume bieten welche Möglichkeiten oder Grenzen, um erforderliche (Kommunikations)Kompeten- zen zu erwerben und anzuwenden? Wie genau lässt sich der Trialog von Wissenschaft, Gesellschaft und Interventionsakteur*innen gestalten? Dabei geht es auch um die Frage, wie soziale Bewegungen mit Gesellschaften kommunizieren – und welche Rolle dabei Intersektionalitätsforschung spielen kann und muss. Empirischer Gegenstand könnten kulturelle Bildungsformate sein, in denen Anti-Diskriminierungs-Interventionsaktivitäten erprobt werden.

Based on current communication processes about social inequalities, this RG is about how corresponding causes, mechanisms of action, and effects are discussed intersectionally. Who can shape these communication processes and how; and why? And what role do privileges play in this? Which formats, media and spaces offer which possibilities or limits for acquiring and applying the necessary (communication) competencies? How exactly can the trialogue of science, society and intervention actors be shaped? This also involves the question of how social movements communicate with societies - and what role intersectionality research can and must play here. The empirical object could be cultural education formats in which anti-discrimination intervention activities are tested.

Institutionen und damit verbundene Prozesse sind machtgestättigt. In ihnen materialisieren sich Macht- und Herrschaftsmuster, die über das Wechselspiel von Diskriminierung und Privilegierung soziale Ungleichheiten (re)produzieren. Dahinter stehen historisch gewachsene Prozesse. Dem gegenüber stehen aber genauso historisch gewachsene Interventionen um entsprechende Wirkungsmechanismen zu unterwandern. In sehr weitreichender Konsequenz folgt Abolitionismus dieser Logik. Abolitionismus ist gewissermaßen eine Bewegung überaus konsequenter Intervention, wobei dabei unterschiedliche Strategien und Maßnahmen verfolgt werden können. Zugleich vereinigen sich hinter diesem Ansatz höchst heterogene Akteur*innen, vereint im Ansatz Institutionen, die Ungleichheit (re)produzieren über Problematisierungen und weitere Strategien letztlich abzuschaffen, so Gefängnisse oder auch bestimmte Gesetze. Dies lässt sich empirisch nachvollziehen, etwa entlang spezifischer Bewegungen oder Akteur*innen, unter Berücksichtigung von Kontextbedingungen, so entlang von Hinterfragungen von Solidarität oder Handlungskompetenzen. Dies kann sowohl aktuell wie historisch erfolgen. Aber Abolitionismus als Forschungskern kann sich auch anders, indirekter oder deutlich theoretischer genähert werden, so über Erzählungen über Widerstand, Normsetzungsprozesse oder (Re)präsentationsmuster. Durch die Betrachtung von vergangenen und aktuellen Transformationsprozessen ist es möglich unterschiedliches Interventionspotential vereint im Abolitionismus zu erfassen, zu problematisieren, aber daraus auf Handlungsstrategien abzuleiten. So folgen aus Interventionen und deren Analyse neue abolitionistisch wirkende Interventionen im Rahmen dieser Forschungsgruppe.

Institutions and related processes are saturated with power. In them, patterns of power and domination materialize, (re)producing social inequalities through the interplay of discrimination and privilege. Behind them are historically evolved processes. On the other hand, there are also historically developed interventions to undermine the corresponding mechanisms of action. Abolitionism follows this logic to a very large extent. In a sense, abolitionism is a movement of extremely consistent intervention, whereby different strategies and measures can be pursued. At the same time, highly heterogeneous actors are united behind this approach, united in the approach to (re)produce inequality through problematizations and other strategies, such as prisons or certain laws. This can be traced empirically, for example along specific movements or actors, taking into account contextual conditions, such as questioning solidarity or competencies to act. This can be done both topically and historically. But abolitionism as a research core can also be approached differently, more indirectly or clearly more theoretically, for example through narratives about resistance, norm-setting processes or (re)presentation patterns. By looking at past and current transformation processes, it is possible to grasp and problematize different intervention potentials united in abolitionism, but also to derive strategies for action from them. Thus, new abolitionist interventions follow from interventions and their analysis within the framework of this research group.

Abolitionism offers a response to how critique of intersectional discrimination can be framed as intervention. In the spirit of Lorde's "A master's tool can never dismantle the master's house," abolitionism focuses not on transformation but on a revolutionary reconceptualization of society as community. Does abolitionism offer a framework for translating a critique of domination into a social theory?

Aus der Arbeits- und Gewerkschaftsforschung heraus werden in dieser FG Analyse, Kommunikation und Intervention als gleichgewichtete Angelpunkte zusammengeführt, um intersektionelle soziale Ungleichheiten im Kontext von Arbeit(swelten) zu debattieren und intersektionelle Solidarität als Intervention auszuloten.

Insofern hier alle drei Elemente des methodischen Dreischritts zusammengeführt werden und mit Arbeit(swelt) und intersektioneller Solidarität konkrete Gegenstände titel- gebend sind, folgt FG 4 einer anderen Baulogik als die anderen FG. Dennoch nimmt sie weder eine über- noch eine untergeordnete Rolle ein. Durch die Gleichzeitigkeit der Ele- mente des methodischen Dreischritts wird hier deren kreislaufgemäßes Miteinander betont, welches auch die anderen FG prägt. Umgekehrt ziehen sich Arbeit(swelten) und die Idee intersektioneller Solidarität durch alle FG. Das entspricht ihrer Rolle als zentralen, nicht aber einzigen Gegenständen des PIKS. So baut FG 4 auf die anderen drei auf und ergänzt und grundiert diese zugleich.

Ausgegangen wird dabei in FG 4, erstens, von der Frage was intersektionelle soziale Ungleichheiten in Arbeit(swelten) ausmacht und wie diese (durch Macht und Herrschaft) Diskriminierungen und Privilegien sowie entsprechende Repräsentationsmuster und Normsetzungen produzieren und stabilisieren. Das wird, zweitens, an Fragen zur Kommunikation rückgebunden (etwa durch Gewerkschaften) und drittens an das Ausloten entsprechender Interventionsstrategien (etwa Streiks). Es geht u.a. darum welche Rolle dabei intersektionelle Solidarität (auch in gegebener Verbindung zu intersektioneller sozialer Gerechtigkeit und Teilhabe/Mitbestimmung) als intersektionelle Interventionskompetenz spielt. Aber auch, wer hat dabei welche agencies und (privilegiengesättigte) Möglichkeiten; und welche Rolle spielen dabei Kommunikationskompetenzen? Aus einem Gegenwartsfokus heraus wird die historische Genese dieser Prozesse betrachtet, wobei Deutschland in transkulturelle und transnationale Vergleiche eingebunden wird.

From the perspective of labor and trade union research, this research group brings together analysis, communication and intervention as equally weighted pivotal points in order to debate intersectional social inequalities in the context of work and to explore intersectional solidarity as an intervention.
In so far as all three elements of the methodological three-step are brought together here, and in so far as work and intersectional solidarity are concrete objects that give the project its title, RG 4 follows a different structural logic than the other RGs. Nevertheless, it takes neither an over- nor a subordinate role. The simultaneity of the elements of the methodological three-step emphasizes their circular coexistence, which also characterizes the other RGs. Conversely, work and the idea of intersectional solidarity run through all RG. This corresponds to their role as central, but not sole, objects of the PIKS. Thus, RG 4 builds on the other three and at the same time complements and underpins them.
First, RG 4 starts from the question of what constitutes intersectional social inequalities in the world of work and how these produce and stabilize (through power and domination) discrimination and privilege as well as corresponding patterns of representation and norm-setting. Secondly, this is linked back to questions of communication (e.g. through trade unions) and thirdly to the exploration of corresponding intervention strategies (e.g. strikes). Among other things, it is about the role of intersectional solidarity (also in connection with intersectional social justice and participation) as an intersectional intervention competence. But also, who has which agencies and (privilege-saturated) opportunities in this; and what role do communication competencies play in this? From a contemporary focus, the historical genesis of these processes will be considered, integrating Germany into transcultural and transnational comparisons.

Project Idea Draft for the Doctoral College for Intersectionality Studies and the Employee Rights Center

The Employee Rights Center San Diego (ERC: https://weberc.net/) is interested in facilitating an international project on labor unions with the Doctoral College for Intersectionality Studies at the University of Bayreuth (PKIS: https://www.intersektionalitaetsstudien.uni-bayreuth.de/en/index.html).

The exchange stems from Alor Calderon (ERC Director) and Gülten Gizem Fesli’s research on Trade Union Organizing Strategies for Transnational Care Workers in Germany and the USA, funded by a grant from the union friendly Hans-Boeckler-Foundation. The Ph.D. research is partly based in California from April to September 2024.

The project idea includes collaborating on an international exchange project between the ERC, PKIS, German workers' centers, and trade unions on transnational labor unionism.

The possibility of financial support from the Hans-Boeckler-Foundation and/or the PKIS for this project needs to be explored as the Foundations has funds available for such union related projects by stipend holders.

The international project could take place in fall 2025 to allow enough time for preparation. The ERC is eager on facilitating an international exchange to Germany along with other U.S. worker centers and labor unions. These groups could possibly visit and collaborate during the PKIS 2025 fall conference.

  - A connection could and possibly should be made between Germany and California as the biggest and financially strongest state in the USA with a GDP close to Germanys GDP (California is the 4^th largest economy all over the world after Germany, that id the 3^rd largest economy)
  - Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, has made it California’s goal to overcome Germany’s GDP so that California will be the 3^rd largest economy in the world
  - Therefore, strong ties between Germany and California, especially regarding the labor movement, should be established to reciprocally learn about union density, union issues, and union organizing
- What happens in Germany to be a good best practice example? How is community formed in migrant/ Black and Latinx worker communities?
