When the entire team was first training to be in the Olympics, they needed to establish where everyone was going to sit on the bobsled. Coach Irving decided to place them all. If someone tried to protest, he would simply tell them forcefully to sit there, he didn't take no for an answer. Pace Setting is about setting high standards and that's exactly what he did. The style in the phrase would be "do as I do now," which is basically what he said.

He started encouraging them about how they turned or how they run to start off the bobsled. Coaching means to develop people for the future and that's what Coach Irving did, he prepared his team for the Olympics.

In the beginning of the movie Coach Irving wasn't the most supportive of the bobsledding team. As the movie went on, he bonded more and more with the boys and he soon became a strong believer in his team. By the end of the movie, you could pretty much consider them all friends. Even if they lost, they were all proud of each other. The affiliative leadership role is about building strong bonds and relationships, a skill that Coach Irving managed to develop over the course of the movie.
